Trouble with infra-red remote

I purchased a Nikon infra red remote for my D80. Upon receipt, I removed the plastic liner over the battery. It is not activating the camera. I set camera to "bulb" & remote.

Shouldn't I be able to see the infra red light if it's activated? I'm suspecting I have a bad unit or have not set up the camera correctly. I even went so far as to buy a new battery for the remote.

Any suggestions?

As they say, when all else fails, read the directions. I had everything set up correctly, Except I left it on auto focus...works on manual...duh

Go page 38 of Nikon guide. You will use one two modes,
Delayed remote or Quick-response remote.
When in one of the modes you must use it within one minute or it return to single frame or continuous shooting mode.
