After much deliberation I order a Canon 70D from Amazon and even paid $3.00 for one day shipping. But we had a storm here yesterday and UPS tracking said I was an "Exception", now after 68 years I have been called a lot of things, but never an exception. My new delivery date is Monday, January 6th. Amazon refunded my extra charge for one day delivery. I am selling my Canon T5i which is listed in the classifieds, if anyone is interested. I probably should have purchased the 70D in October, but I got the T5i instead, dumb, but you are never too old to learn. I am sure I will have some questions of you nice folks about the new camera. Happy New Year everyone. :-(

Keep both you never know when you need a back-up or put a different lens on each camera for when you need speedy pictures

Hello Exception,

We often forget how many of our mistakes turn out to be completely minor blips in life. Enjoy the new toy when it arrives.

You will love it - I pre-ordered mine as an upgrade to my T3i and it's like night and day. Every time I grab the T3i to take a shot, I wonder how I lived with such antiquated technology! :)

There's a theme here. Is it really the equipment that makes the photo? Sorry to interrupt the thread, but the question always has to be asked! By the way, great choice of equipment.

Congratulations on your purchase. I'm sure you will love it. If I'm not wrong (I might be)that model Canon competes directly with the Nikon D7100?

It can certainly help. For example doing challenging BIF shots, it certainly helps to have a system with excellent AF including quick, effective acquisition, and obviously if a shot is going to be excessively cropped, MP certainly counts. Then we have the difference in glass. I can assure you that my two L lens take sharper images than my non L lenses. The equipment doesn't necessarily help the photo, but like in the punch line for so many Yiddish jokes, "It wouldn't hoit!"

No, of course not, its the person not the equipment. As someone once said Willie Mosconi could shoot pool with a broomstick and beat anyone with a $1,000 stick.

Just as an aside, a now deceased friend of mine, beat Mosconi on TV, and Mosconi wasn't using a broomstick! :)

Yes, it's the equipment that makes the photo. If I stand outside and use all my mental capabilities, but without a camera and lens, I won't have much of a photo to share.

The photographer, camera, and lens should be of comparable quality for the most effective results. If one is not at the level of the others, it should be upgraded.

The great thing about upgrading the camera or lens is that it can get us out of our comfort zone and make us improve ourselves as photographers.

True. But how much cooler were the trick shots he could do with a $1000 stick?

This meme is also completely wrong, because it's talking about the wrong thing. It doesn't matter if someone else can make a better photograph with a inferior equipment. It's whether either of you can make better photographs with better equipment.

I might amend what you stated "that makes a photo" to read " takes a photo". But I share your philosophy. There are many factors that go into capturing an image. The equipment is as vital a component as is the photographer. There seems to be no reason why one element of a photo is more important than the others needed to create that image. Does pepperoni make a pizza? Did his camera make Abraham Zapruder's film any more significant? There are too many variables in a photograph to assign levels of importance.

DJ, one needs only ask,"how many pics could you produce, either good or bad, without a camera at all?".
I rest my case, it's ALL about the equipment! ;-)

Mike, enjoy your new camera.
