One of the fun things about this time of year ... with the migration, I very occasionally see Cackling geese.
I wonder if someone else has the same obsession... trying to distinguish between juvenile Great Basin Canada geese, lesser Canada geese, and the Tavener's and Richardson's Cackling geese. Most people aren't interested and just lump them all together as white-cheeked geese.
The west coast Minima is extremely easy to ID ... we don't see them here.
The first two pics show the size difference. I was lucky to get one in flight before others in the flock blocked the view.
On the last one ... I usually take some pics just to document what I see each day. When I got home and looked at the pics of the day, the Cackling geese were obvious.
Thank you for posting. I am enlightened and inspired.
Nice shots! Looks like that lesser is trying to hitch a ride on the other one :-)
  Thankyou for sharing those.
Thanks for peaking my curiosity to brush up on goose identification. Super series

I appreciate all of the comments. Saw some more yesterday ... and I'm having a lot of difficulty trying to ID each one. All the guides say that beyond a certain point field identification is impossible (Richardson's, Tavener's, Lesser Canada) ...
