Thank you for clarifying, Annie. I rarely watch TV, but now that you say that, I do remember hearing that on the news.
But you could say that about college players, right? They still have those rules, don't they?

Yes, the NCAA has very strict rules on what college athletes can and cannot get. Follow-up rant deleted... :-)

I've been seeing this question often here and there on UHH since I've been here (not very long). My own definition has long been exactly the same as Wikipedia's:

• A photographer is a person who takes photographs.
• A professional photographer uses photography to earn money;
• Amateur photographers take photographs for pleasure….

The controversy seems to come in on the second point, that a professional earns money. How much money? (This frequently becomes an angels-head-of-a-pin discussion.) I have always been completely comfortable characterizing myself as a retired professional photographer, based on the fact that I was a full-time working professional at least for the 16 years that I owned and operated a studio. I have over 30 years of working experience, including freelancing and working for hire.

But…is a person who has a full-time non-photographic job, but who also has a booth at the farm market or art fair selling an occasional art print…a professional photographer? By the narrowest definition, yes. Or not. What about the weekend wedding photographer who works for the local studio occasionally? So on and so forth. I do not have answers for these questions. I just see them asked a lot. These days it matters not to me since I am now a full-time working amateur. :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:
I've been seeing this question often here and ther... (show quote)

The IRS has had to figure out rules for this, because things like deductions and "business expenses" change for a professional versus a hobbyist. I don't know the rules well enough to quote them, I'll look them up later, because I am curious too.

I think this thread should be renamed and called:

"FREE FOR ALL"

I come back to it daily just to see what the new topic is for the day. :mrgreen:

I suggest that tomorrow's subject should be what settings to use for a wedding shoot.
