I think it's strange ...

... that camera review outfits don't produce direct comparisons between natural competitors (Canon SX50 vs Sony HX300; Sigma vs Tamron vs Nikon vs Canon 105 macros, for example). I would find that more useful than trying to make my own verdicts by poring over individual reviews; that flies in the face of the scientific aphorism 'Never change more than one factor in an analysis'. Do you think the reason might be that testers could face the wrath of losing manufacturers (expressed as "Cancel my ads)? If so, how do the automobile mags get away with it?

If you google camera x vs. camera y (naming your cameras, of course) you will find any available comparisons.

Thanks for the replies. I was really ignorant about the subject, and now will do as you all suggest.

The DxOMark lens ratings do exactly that, for lenses which can be mounted on the same camera.

You can't do the scientific test you suggest for the Canon 105mm macro vs the Nikon 105mm macro, because they can't be put on the same camera and there is automatically more than one variable.

I agree, what would be the point anyway...you either want it for your Nikon or your Canon so not much use comparing them...if you are buying a new camera, then you can compare makes to see what you like but otherwise I don't see any point...

To much time in people turning photography into a science, The science is in the building of the camera, they are tested every way possible before they are put on the market. Turn your thoughts into taking photos instead of comparing one camera to the other. Your test are not science they are a waste of time. I read these comments all the time with no results at the end of them.

I would like to but they do not list my camera - Sony Alpha 77

Oops, looked a bit further and found it but the specifications for the Alpha 77 has some glaring gaps

Rubbish...if you don't have a camera and are looking for one that suits what you want to do, apart from taking someone's advice in a shop, the only way to get info is by looking at reviews...taking pics only happens AFTER you have bought your chosen camera..!!
