From a tidal marsh on Seabrook Island, southeast of Charleston SC this morning.

This is my first recognizable Kingfisher image. All previous attempts to photograph this shy, speedy and noisy fisherman resulted in either an unidentifiable puny fuzz ball or a vast bird-less motion-blurred landscape. These guys are fast! This is a male.

I added the clouds.

Nikon D300, Nikkor 300mm f4 AFS, 1.4TC

All I can say is ... wow!. I've only seen one here .... very fast and agile .... esp if chased by a kestrel.

Must have been very difficult to find it and keep it in the field of view with a fixed power lens.

Nice job with the sky replacement.

Thanks to all for looking and commenting.
We will be here thru January and have already determined that the presents of birds on the tidal marsh is dependent on the tide. High tide brings the birds. I've downloaded a local tidal chart.
I'm hoping that this guy works the same area every day. I'll be heading out at high tide...and will be on him like a dog on a porkchop!

Terrific images of one of my favorite birds! They are definitely challenging; I got a flight shot this week that looks like a blurry bullet :)

Take a closer look. Feeding birds move in on low tide so they can walk the flats and catch fish. The exception may be the area your working is so low that water is only present at high tide. 99 percent of the time this holds true. Good-Luck..
