Subtlety of light

As many of you know, I got some lights for Christmas. I am a complete neophyte when comes to using indoor lighting so I thought I'd do some experimentation this evening. These three photos were unmodified and are jpegs straight out of the camera. They differ because of the position and intensity of the lights I used. I had two umbrellas, one spot and a speedlight that I moved around and bounced off the ceiling. It mad quite a difference in the outcome of the shots. I believe I also manually changed the setting of the aperture and shutter speed. To me, however, that is also light manipulation. Thought it was interesting.

I think that one is the best of the bunch also. But, like I said, I was mainly just trying to figure out how the lights affect the pictures. I have a lot to learn. Thanks for taking a look.

I also like 1 and 3 the best. The second one looks a little dark.

Thanks for taking a look. I was just trying different things to see what it would look like. I know so little about indoor photography that I have to try things and then see how they look.

That first one is interesting in that I put the speedlight behind the subject. Gives and interesting effect. Thanks.

Like 3 the best, but all are good. Now for a person (or doll) to practice on. Keep up the good work.

It is just like you said and not just for you. Changing the shutter speed will alter the ambient light, while a change in aperture will effect the amount of flash hitting the sensor (+/-).
