So Nancy is always saying "Why do you drag all that stuff (camera gear) around with you ??"
Well earlier this week I left most of it at the B&B and here I am walking down the beach in Cape May and look up and there is a Snowy Owl sitting in a tree watching me from a distance.
I have no tripod with me and only a 50-200 VR on my D7100. UGH !!! Why do I listen ?? So I got a few hand held shots and started to move closer and closer. Of course it flew down the beach and I chased it up & down the beach for an hour trying to get closer and closer. Finally it got tired of me and flew off across the inlet and I walked back to the car.
Lesson learned....take it all with you !! You just never know.....
I follow in your footsteps. Now when we go to the beach, I let Betty pull the carrier with the 2 chairs, drink cooler, beach umbrella and 2 large towels while I carry my camera bag with EVERYTHING I NEED. (except gotta remember the tripod in the future - which I can put on the carrier if needed.

Seems like the best photo opportunities always show up, when you're not prepared (left camera at home or long lens behind). Then when you "shlepp" everything around, nothing ever happens.

I think that is nature's cruel idea of a joke. It seems it is the usual situation. I do use a monopod as my walking stick so that I am a little better prepared since I have to use some aid.
Has anyone tried a motorized golf trolley for their gear if the wife plays up?

Buy a Canon SX50 and have it all! I don't have your problem anymore!

Same here. My sx50 is always with me. Ready for whatever appears.

On such occasion I pull a hand cart with a plastic basket that contains what I thought I might need when I set out. Works well thru the woods but never tried it on a beach...

On a beach make sure the tires are wide. Narrow wheels on a sandy beach are not good.
