Does the "Green Flash" really exist? We are heading out on a cruise in the Pacific. Should I spend every sunset waiting for something that does not really exist? But what an excuse to just set up the camera and feel those warm ocean breezes!

Something that I haven't heard of before - is it a light in the sky?

I've heard of it, but never saw it. I'd love to see it or photos of it if it exists. Have a fun trip.

Ello, welcome to the Hog.
According to those that spend a lot of time on the water, such as sailers, it supposedly exists. I don't know of anybody that has photographed it, but if it's visible to the naked eye, it would be visible to your sensor.
Another place you may look for info, I believe it's also part of the full solar eclipse process, as the sun disappears, it's again, rumored to be visible. There may be more info there.
Good luck, and you may need to be quick as a flash to get a pic! ;-)

Some of my SW Florida friends say it is real and they have witnessed the "green flash". I personally have not noticed it, and it may be very difficult to photograph. But enjoy your cruise and good luck. Maybe you will get some other SW Florida residents that can help.

I've seen it once in the Carrbean waiting for the sun to go down for a night dive. It is so quick you would have to use video to catch it.

I have seen the Green Flash once at sunset and twice at sunrise. If you Google it you will see many convincing examples. The phenomenon is rare because it requires hundreds of miles of clear air in the direction of the sun and that doesn't happen often.

It is often reported by the sunset-watchers in Key West. Of course, both in Key West and on cruise ships, the drinking starts about an hour before sunset!

Didn't get the green flash, but you CAN get the "Etruscan vase", which is very cool . . .

I was a skeptic for years but finally saw "The Green Flash" a couple years ago off the SW FL coast.

The efffect is very real. I got a shot from the Bay of Florida on our way to Boca Chica/Key West when I piloted a friends boat from Portsmouth, NH there. Taken with my older D5100 Nikon I think.

Respectfully Sarge 69, what you have shown is something different from the "green flash." I've seen the flash a number of times in different locations. Mine were all at sunset, but I'm told it happens at sunrise also. There must be a clear and sharp horizon to see the flash. Clouds or mist will block it. Some friends have told me the term "flash" is misleading. They may have a point. As the last edge of the sun drops below the horizon, there is a spot of beautiful green for a fraction of a second. Literally, if you blink, you'll miss it. You must remove your sunglasses also. Watch for it. Photographing it would be a challenge, not only because of the very brief time, but, by definition, you'll be shooting right at the sun.
