teleconverter compatibility with Tamron 200-400 zoom

Can anyone tell me if my Nikon AF-S teleconverter TC-1.4 EII is compatible with a Tamron 200-400 lens?

(I usually use the teleconverter on my Nikon 70-200, but there are some birds at a nearby water area that I want to shoot closer than that one reaches.)

BTW, I am now reading other entries re: teleconverter/lens compatibility and will probably just go out and try it!

The Tamron is an old mechanical AF lens, and a slow one at that. Even if your camera were able to AF the lens with the 1.4X, that AF-S 1.4X model would not AF the lens as it has no mechanical connection, only electronic. It may allow manual focus use of the lens, but check the fit VERY carefully to be sure the optical elements of the lens and converter do not crash into each other and destroy both of them.

Thanks for your input ---> I shall try to delete this thread because I discovered that the teleconvertor wouldn't even fit onto the tamron lens.

That's a common issue with slow lenses. The rear element extends past the lens mount plane and causes an interference fit with the optical element of the TC. A good rule of thumb is to NEVER try to mount a variable aperture lens to a TC of any kind. Fixed aperture lenses tend to be mount compatible most of the time even if they often do not AF properly.

Aha. Thank you. (There is so much I don't know, but the process of learning it all is so fun.)

Didn't think it would, but was hesitant to say pending further info. Leave it to the pro(s) I thought. Leave it to MT...a cauldron of knowedge.
