I just ordered a

Rokinon 500mm Mirror Lens for Nikon Cameras.

I know it is not the best,but I want to see what I can do with it. The price was right, $24.97 with my discount.

I've been seeing them on eBay in the $200-250 range, some with a 2x teleconverter.
And then there's the 800mm for just a few bucks more.

I have a Tokina 500mm of the same optical design. The aperture is fixed at f8, and neutral density filters are furnished, which screw into the rear of the lens, so you have to remove the lens from the camera to fit one. One of these filters is neutral, no reduction in light, so I assume that a filter must be in place for optical reasons.

My lens is pretty sharp, but rather low in contrast. This can be helped in Lightroom, of course. Focusing can be a challenge given the slow speed of the lens and the miniscule depth of field. Manual focus, of course! Be aware that out of focus image have a doughnut shape, caused by the design of the lens. Out of focus highlights particularly show this; it may or may not bother you.

Mine came with a lens shade which screws to the lens either extended or reversed, to save space. Make sure your example has such. As far as filters on the front of the lens ... how deep are your pockets?? I suppose you might be able to find screw in black and white filters for the rear of the lens, I haven't tried.

The lens is light and compact, good thing since it lacks a tripod socket. At $25.00, give it a try.

I didn't find it at 25, I had $77.00 in O dollars on Overstock.com. The lens was on sale for $103.00.

I remember buying my Tokina for about $100 in used EX+ some years ago from, I imagine, KEH, my go-to folks for used gear. Your price for, I presume, new sounds like a good deal. Make sure you get the ND filters!
