Recently I purchased a Sigma 150-500mm lens for my Nikon D5100. I find it to be a fantastic lens. My question is, it came with 2 teleconverters. Sigma 1.4 and the Sigma 2.0.
I have not used these yet and need some advice if I really need them and if I do which one should I keep. With the extra reach with the smaller sensor on the camera im not sure what to do. The teleconverters were all in the same auction on e-bay.
Thank you and hope everyone has a Happy New Year.

The 1.4X is much more useful and may fit other lenses you may have now or in the future. The 2X is more specialized for 2.8 lenses if you want to retain AF with most of today's camera bodies.

How to answer this without seeming really rude? John, we see a lot of posts on, "Will this converter work with my lens?" or "Which converter should I get?". But I believe you're the first with lens and two converters in hand and want us to tell you if you "need" them. Suggestion: Put them on your camera, take some photos, then you decide if you need them.

I'd say it depends on what you want to take pictures of. With a 500 mm lens on a crop sensor, it can be really challenging to find the bird or whatever you are trying to capture (I sometimes use my 500 on a T3i with 1.6 crop). I've tried using the 500 with a 1.4 extender on the crop, and I've gotten good results, but it takes a bit of practice. The other thing you need to consider is what it does to your f-stop and whether autofocus will continue to function with your D5100 with the extender.

Unless you're pretty specialized, I doubt you need the 2x with a 500. You do have an advantage with the zoom I suppose, as you should be able to find your subject at 150mm, then zoom in.

new to tc's myself. I have the sigma lenses 120 to 300 f2.8 and the 150-500 f5-6.3 with both the 1.4 and 2 tc's.

auto focus on the 150-500 with either tc is just not usable for me.

the Sigmas website has the following link which may help

I've tried TC's in the past thinking it would be a cheap way to extend my zoom capability. Sadly it didn't work out that way and disappointed in the results.

That said I do use a Nikon 1.4 on occasion. It turns the Nikon 80-400 into a little more reach.

My advice is to try each one out and understand the pros and cons. The f stop changes will have an impact.

Enjoy learning.
