Hey all, I'm in need of a hard case lens carrier that I can put my Nikkor 400 in and use as carry on. I'm looking at B&H a Pelican 1510 case. My lens is 13" in length and at the business end 6" x 6". Any other recommendations? :P

Yes, get the pick and pluck foam inserts. They're great and you can custom fit them to you specific needs.

I purchased the Pelican iM2500 Storm, which is very similar in size. However, after using it for about 2 or 3 months, I found the foam to be a pain in the neck. It was breaking up (small cubes were breaking away) and I wanted to rearrange my gear - something you can't do with the foam. Once you pluck it, you live with it. At that point I purchased the padded divider kit ($75) and the lid utility organizer (B&H # PEUOIM2500 $39). It works well now, but I think I would have been better off with a Lowepro or Think Tank roller bag. I like the fact that the Pelican is water tight and virtually crush proof, but I don't really think those are the features that are needed (at least in my case). Just my two cents.....for free! Good luck.

Why do you need a Pelican if it's carry on? The lens isn't fragile. :-)

I bought the Pelican with the padded dividers so I could use it as a carry-on and I love it. It is easy to transport around the airport and, as far as why you need something like that as a carry-on is concerned, how many times have you seen some inconsiderate donkey try to cram a 3-suiter in the overhead bin? A lot of people pay no attention to what they are doing and have no regard for the property of others.

I own four cameras and accompanying lenses. All equipment is in individual Pelican cases . Have used them while in the military and will continue to use them as a civilian , All are carry on . All protect equipment from uncaring passengers and are water proof and have pressure release valves . I have never regretted buying them.

If it's carry on you probably don't need a hard case. Tamrac makes an excellent case for large lenses. (Super Telephoto Lens Pack: #5793.

On some local flights if you do not board early there is NO overhead storage space due to inconsiderate fellow passengers and you are forced to let the airline check your bags at the ramp before boarding plane. This is my reason for a hard case carrier. Ya just never know what danger lurks but the Shadow knows.
