Sort of a quiet, gloomy day.

Please feel free to do whatever you wish with this image.

Two things strike me with this image. First is the area below the dock. There are pollen (?) specks floating in the water that are distracting. There is also a limb protruding into the water that I would prefer to have removed. The second is compositional. I think it would be more effective if the dock were lower in the composition. This would also help to take your horizon out of the middle of the frame. Both objectives could be achieved by cropping right above the dead tree limb. Overall, however, I really like the scene. The light is very good.

This is a 27 MB file, and it just about scrambled my computer's brains. Anyway, I like the photo and its peaceful scene and composition, but thought I could improve a few things. I have saved the results as a smaller file, because my computer couldn't deal with this huge file and UHH at the same time.

First, I straightened the water line, then cropped a bit. I was bothered by the large gray cloud's reflection and all the brushy bits in the right-hand foreground, so I cropped them out and placed the water line at 1/3 the way up in the photo. Then, I cloned out little distracting things and bright spots here and there, and reduced highlights about 12 percent to bring out more detail in the sky and water. Then, I sharpened it. What do you think?

Thank you. I appreciate your improvements.

Sorry that the file was so large - I usually deal with TIFF files way over a gigabite and don't worry about JPG's unless I am sending an email. The D800 killed my old computer and I was forced to upgrade.

Once again, your thought fullness was well taken.

UHH will take really big files, its server must be the size of a city block. My computer is showing its age! I hope you like what I did to your nice, big photo!

We all have different visions of what these images should look like. Yes, I like your thoughts.

Sometimes after looking at them in the field and on the video display, we get too focused and don't see what is going on. Sort of like a horse with blinders.

What I appreciate about what you did, is that you worked with the framework I presented. That is often lacking around here.

Like the image very much. I adjusted the contrast and took out some of the debris floating on the water as well as straightened the horizon. 2 versions, one a little more saturated. I too had decrease the image size. Would not load on UHH.

I like to improve a photo if I see a way to do it, but not make large changes unless it seems clear that the OP wants that. So often, a few small changes make a real difference.

Thanks! It was not very extensive. Brightness and contrast almost always improves an image. I considered a crop, but was not sure about it, so left it alone.

The download on my screen looked over-saturated and some of the grass was garishly yellow-green. It also looked a bit noisy.

Now I know that what I've done reverses much of what you did yourself (sharpness or texture, saturation), and I even darkened it a bit, but I think it's brought out a look that possibly wasn't evident in the original. I de-noised a LOT and desaturated a bit, straightened a bit, toned down some of the foreground debris (but left most of it in). The de-noising has taken some of the sharpness from the trees, but if you can't see the original and this edit side-by-side, it doesn't jump out at you (unlike the vivid green debris floating on the water).

Nice shot.

I like the versions with more contrast and the other little changes (straightened horizon and getting rid of specs).

One issue related to composition that might only be personal to me:

The sky and the water both describe "V" shapes with the small parts of the "Vs" almost touching. My eye is drawn to the place where those powerful shapes almost come together.

The bridge, on the other hand, is low and off to one side of the image. It is also a powerful center of attention. So, my eye is drawn to inconsistent places in the photograph. That bothers me, but it might not bother anyone else in the world.

On the other hand, it is a beautiful scene and your image makes me want to visit it.

Good work.
