How sad. I have never smoked but I imagine its very difficult to stop. I hope your message gets through to someone...and I hope you have a wonderful new year.

I lost my husband to lung cancer in 2005. The really sad part is he quit 3 months before he was diagnosed. Ten months later....he was gone.

I know it was very hard for him to quit. I wish he had done it sooner.

But they do!! The feds make hundreds of thousands of dollars from all the packs sold. Roughly 56% of every pack sold is tax.

I quit five years ago (cold turkey), after fifty four years of smoking. Like the saying goes, if I can anybody can. Really it takes the desire to quit, not just a whim.

I got tired of getting ripped off, burning holes in everything, spilling ashtrays into my bed, and the general stink.
Most of the people who smoke, are the ones that can least afford it. They do without other necessities, just to possibly kill themselves. Now if that is not what you call stupid, I don't know what is.

Carl
I am saddened to hear of your Wife's death, but here is the truth about New Year's Resolutions:
It doesn't matter what you're trying to do or not do, New Year's Day may as well be The Fourth of July, St. Patrick's Day, Veteran's Day, Valentine's Day or the second Tuesday in September as far as that goes, for all the good it does!

Call me cynical, negative, or anything else you like, but at the end of the day, i'm a Realist. Carl, if you or anyone else on here thinks for a second that making a Resolution on a certain day, regardless of what day it is, that it's going to "Keep You" just because of the day you made it, then you have my sympathy.

Any time you do or don't do something for the wrong reasons, you're doomed to fail, it's just that simple. If you put more emphasis on the Day rather than the issue you're dealing with, you may as well be pissing in the ocean.

If you don't believe me, just look around you and you'll see the proof of what i'm saying in the disappointed people from New Year's Day 2013.

What i'm trying to say is simply this. If you want to do or not do anything badly enough, you can do it on any day of the year.
You have to do it for YOU and not for the DATE!

Yes, if you're wondering, i am a smoker and a stupid ass for being one, but i'm not stupid enough to believe i'm going to stop on January 1, 2014 just because it's New Year's Day. I think i'm going to shoot for March 11, that day has just bound to have some type of significance to make me stop smoking.

Happy New Year everyone!
R/T

This may sound stupid, but if you want to quit, try American Spirits. They are ALL NATURAL, no chemicals are add to them. I use to smoke and then started using these. They last longer and you end up smoking less of them. You do NOT get the need that you have to have a smoke. When you do decide to quit it is a lot easier. I remember that last one I had. It was the last one in the pack and I thought at $7 per pack I was Not going to waste any more money and put my MIND to it that I was no longer going to be a SLAVE to SMOKE. Think about it man is the ONLY animal that is attracted to smoke.

Tricks to help. Put cigarette in your mouth and look down at the ground. The smoke will go into your eyes and make them water. It will go up into you nose.
Also the first time you light up one do NOT inhale just keep the smoke in your mouth and on the last puff also keep in your mouth. You will always remember this taste in your mouth as smoking and you will quit.
Good luck and remember you have to want to quit in your mind and you will. Stop being the money machine for tobacco company. If you smoke a pack a day and pay $7 that is $2548 per year. That would make for a nice camera or lens.

Cigarette companies are evil. If they own you, you will die. Your death will be slow and agonizing. I know this because I'm a retired respiratory therapist. I've heard every excuse and story ad nauseum. Make a smart choice and don't butt yourself to death.

I was a heavy smoker for almost 50 years, (used anything...cigs, pipe, and cigars) and even though I recognized the bad effects it was having on my body I was unable to successfully break the addiction on my own. I needed help and once I admitted that to myself I looked up "Ethical Hypnotists" and made an appointment to visit. Coupled with my sincere desire to quit the habit, 2 sessions later I had stopped smoking and have never again started. That was 28 years ago. Probably would not be around if I had not quit.
Do it for yourself and your family!!!

So sorry for your loss. I certainly agree with your suggestion.
Smoking is a seductive addiction and the ability to stop takes an concerted prolonged effort.
I encourage everyone to stop.
Being a former smoker ( 1963-2000) I am familiar with the habit and prior to 2000, I tried to stop many times to no avail. While I am no expert I know what worked for me.
I set a date and time to stop. Five minutes before Noon, July 4, 2000 I lit my last Camel. When it was done the pack went in the trash with my favorite Zippo.
What helped me was the philosophy I had only to NOT SMOKE ONE. Days turned to weeks, months, years. After a time one recognizes themselves as NON Smokers.
Quitting is difficult, but it can be accomplished.
Yea I gained weight, I also enjoyed the taste of my food better. Over time I lost the weight, Blood pressure improved, breathing improved, and exercising became something to look forward too.
It is worth quitting.

I wasn't going to post on the as my wife and I have never smoked -we are now 76 - I got my right lung damaged at age 15 and the Dr.s told me to Never start like the other teen agers . Smoking killed my brother at 61 and probably had lots to due with my mother, father, mother in-law and father in-laws heart trouble and death before 70.
For the past 24 yrs I have been sober and involved with AA and Celebrate Recovery and every person I have know say quitting smoking was harder than their other addictions.
