Canon SX50 HS aperture settings

I see various topics about setting the aperture for various shots. I'm fairly new to the camera (six months) and was curious as to the extent my camera would go. I could only find manual settings for the aperture from f 3.4 to f 8.0
Isn't that kind of limiting, or is that normal for this caliber of camera?
Thanks!

That is fairly normal for the smaller sensor cameras. Some open up to f/2.8 but F/8.0 is generally the smallest, but it does give DOF closer to f/16 or f/22 on a full frame camera.

How do you like that Canon SX50? I have heard different comments about it. Would not mind having it as a second camera.

Yes, f/8 is the smallest aperture. The specs are at the end of the user manual. It's on the DVD that came with the camera and also online below. And you can call Canon support and ask them to mail you a free printed copy. I did that after seeing the mention on UHH.

Gerald, there are many happy SX50 users on UHH! If you use the search function, you can see topics and posted images. I don't put the camera name in my titles, but all my "critter" shots were done with this camera.

For the money, it's quite awesome

Yes, I've printed out the manual....big one. I should've looked there.
Does this limit my picture taking somewhat having a narrow band of aperture openings?

I am pleased, so far, with the camera. I just need to experiment more with the "bells and whistles" on it. I hear the 50 x zoom alone is worth the money.

BEST camera I have had in a long time! My only other cameras that I still use are pocket-size Panasonic Lumix and Olympus, but for my more serious outings it is the SX50 (kept my SX40 as backup!).
For me it does as good as my film cameras for the photos I am interested in, and that zoom is so amazing for wildlife!! The turn on the 2x TC that is built in and get some terriffic closeups!

You'll get enough DOF for landscapes, I think - though I mostly have the zoom all the way out :) It's just a matter of getting used to what you have available.

Here are two landscapes:

Love it. Not being able to afford the more expensive camera with various lenses, the SX50 has been a great alternative for me. Especially since it shoots in RAW. I mostly use Manual settings. i'ina

The SX50 also sounds within my budget as I do not want to spend over $2,000 and more only to find that I am not a professional photographer, but just enjoy taking that casual and interesting pictures throughout the year. I'm going to check out the specs.
