Bridge, Windows Explorer, and alternatives

After the most recent Bridge upgrade/update, it became unstable and has been crashing on my system at least five times a day.

About two hours ago (yes, two hours of lost money-making time), I was in Bridge and switched from Filmstrip to Metadata. After working in Metadata, I attempted to switch back to Filmstrip. Bridge crashed. I reopened and tried again. Crash. 11 times.

Finally I was able to get back to Filmstrip by going from Metadata to Essentials first. However, now that I'm back at Filmstrip, where I do most of my work, Bridge won't show any of my pictures. None of them. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

I attempted to leave a message in Adobe's online forums but it was sending me round and round in circles and deleting my message each time. Granted, I use Dragon Naturally Speaking, but still, so much lost time.

I left a message on Adobe's Facebook page, then I went looking for alternatives to Bridge, which had become my alternative to Windows Explorer (PC, Windows 7 & 8). I started using Bridge a couple of years ago because Explorer doesn't give me a picture of what's in the RAW files.

In looking at alternatives just now—and there are many, ranging between free and costly—I discovered that you can download a RAW file support for Windows Explorer directly from Microsoft. It's the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack (16.4.1970.0624). It's here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829

Try it if you use PCs and Windows Explorer but can't see a representation of your RAW files. After using it for just 30 minutes, I can highly recommend it.

Bye Bye Bridge.
