What is the average life of a sensor?

I was looking at vacation pictures that were taken approximately a year and a half ago as well as some that were taken at the beginnig of this month that were taken with the same camera and lenses and the older set seem a little crispier and generally more colorful.

Does anyone know what the useful life of a sensor is and what might be some indicators that it's time for a new camera?

Does G.A.S. sound familiar? I think that the manufacturer has a tested shutter count for all cameras. See if you can find out what yours is. Also it might just need a good cleaning and tweaking.

I bought a Pentax *IST/DL in 1998 sold it 4 years ago with 70K on it and it is still taking solid images. Bear in mid this is a 6 MP sensor in an entry level body and the images are superb. ( I have viewed 8X 10's from the lady to which I sold it, still making stunning ages)

Sorry Jethro, my acronym processor is on vacation at present and I've heard of shutter counts but have never found where that information is stored in my camera.

If anyone has an idea where Nikon stores such info, I would appreciate any help.

G.A.S.= gear acquisition syndrome

Nikon stores the shutter count in the exif data.

Nikon also lists the number of shutter actuations they tested to in most of their camera descriptions.

Example D4 is expected to last at least 400,000 actuations.
D3000 100,000+ actuations

Depends on what you feed it. Everybody knows the role diet plays in the life of any semi sentient being.

A hearty diet of well composed, well exposed, and well focused images will increase the life span of your sensor.

Spray and Pray will shorten it's lifespan. Take your time with each image. Digest everything you can read from the manual or study on good online learning tips.

It will reward you with long lasting good results. It should go for at least a half hour walk per day, or at least a half hour of capturing images each day.

With that in mind and in practice, you will avoid a Sensor Bypass later in your camera's lifespan. Also feed it a healthy diet of the best and highest speed memory cards, as defined by the "MAKER".

One of my Fujifilm S5 Pro bodies, based on a partnership between Fujifilm and Nikon D200 body rewarded me with 254,000 nicely exposed and focused captures, showing it's great breeding and dual heritage of two fine companies.

Half breeds always breed truer and suffer hardships well, for a long life. Two bloodlines often improve the breed.

One of the helpful souls on UHH sent me this the other day. Go to this link and upload your most recent picture. It will give you the shutter count on most cameras. I hope this helps you, too. I found out I've done only about 6000 pictures in the last 6 months, I've been slacking!

Not to worry Don, it takes more than random posts to ruin my karma.

Thanks to Mr. PC and Nikonian 72, I will check those ideas out as well.
