"Import Pictures and Videos" Window not Closing on Computer

I have always experienced the problem of not having the import window closing when importing pictures from my camera. I have experienced the problem with Canon models SX30IS, SX50IS and the 60D.

This applies to uploading pictures onto my Windows 7 laptop. I have two laptops - not identical except for the OS - and experience the problem on both machines.

A minor inconvenience if I want to upload from more than one camera at a session, as the Window states "This device, 'Canon Powershot SX50IS' is already being used by Windows."

This necessitates rebooting my laptop before proceeding with additional uploads.

Can anyone suggest a solution or workaround?

Have you tried importing the photos through a card reader instead of directly from the camera?

If using Canon's Camera Window software to upload, just close the program, remove the first camera, plug the 2nd one in wait a minute or so, restart the program, etc. Should recognize each camera as you start it up.

Thanks for the suggestion. No, I haven't but I will try, though I would prefer not having an extra step.

When you get a program hanging just do a CTRL-ALT-DELETE and select Open Task Manager. That will help you find out if a program is running or not.
You can also go to Control Panel and look at Device Manager to see if there are any problems with the camera hook up via USB.
You also might want to look at the driver that is doing the work of communicating between computer and camera.
What version of Windows do you have. Vista has a known problem with connecting to external devices but usually they refuse to work at all.
Good Luck and Happy New Year.

It is easier on your camera and the battery.

Yup and you've probably already heard this... an external card reader for about $10. No cables, no upload windows no hassle. Simply copy/paste from the reader to the folder of your choice and it's done.

I've been using readers for about a decade and wouldn't be without mine. All styles are available also from CF to SD and so on.

The neat thing is your computer(s) will see a reader as a hard drive so the copy/paste is very simple.

I never use a card reader, always connect by cable, that is what Canon designed the CameraWindow program for and it works GREAT! Less wear & tear on the card slot and door!

as has already been mentioned it sounds as though your device software needs updating
