Need a little guidance

I want to do something specific with a photo, and I would appreciate some tips on how to best accomplish what I need. First, I have Lightroom 4 and Photoshop Elements (version 11, I think). Here's what I want to do with the picture.

I want to turn it into a landscape, 8x10, and I want the picture itself to take up the middle 1/3 or so of the picture. I want white space in the 1/3 above the picture, and in the 1/3 below the picture. In the white space above and below the photo, I want to enter a quote about friendship.

Can someone give me an idea of the best way to accomplish this? Layers? Thank you!!!

In Photoshop you just go to canvas size and increase it leaving the photo central , not sure about Elements and Lightroom but would expect it to be the same

Don't use either program, but other editing progs I do. So will do the best I can until better help comes along.

Yes, you'll need to use layers. You didn't say what size the original photo is. Depending, you may not get a true 8x10, but close to it. Create a white layer the size you need, and then drag/copy your photo into it. Center the photo vertically, and then trim the horizontal edges.

Add your text and save.

Yes, the same in PSE.
Image->Resize->Canvas Size
Select the units you want to use to enlarge (cm, inches, pixels)
for width, height, or both; also select colour for extension. Click OK.
Now select Text tool and font, colour, and start typing.
(Make sure the text is a different colour from the background).
The text will go on its own layer, and when you're finished typing you can enlarge or reduce the size, move the text around, or change the font and/or colour.

I did it! The sad thing is that I'm not sure how I did it. Layers are always a mystery to me. Thanks for your help!

I have a free download program called Photo Scape. If I were doing such a photo I'd make my main photo pure, full white.

Layer your cropped photo over the top... cropped so it's shorter, but as long as the original white.

Photo Scape also does fonts (graphics) that could be entered and placed in the white spaces... all the Windows colors are available for your graphics. That would be my solution.

That's a nice idea, I hope it works out for you.

In reverse, I'd create a new canvas that is precisely 8X10 first, then copy and paste the photo onto the canvas as a new layer. The photo on that layer can then be resized until you get it just like you want it. Use a third layer to put the text on. When you're done you'll have to flatten all the layers into one before converting to JPG.
