Was what to do in 2014
Thank you all for your kind help and suggestions, many I will be considering.
Blogging does interest me and is perhaps something I can do. Yes I have seen the site of Jim S on World Press and am very impressed. I cannot say my work is anything as good as his!
If anyone does have a blog perhaps you could give me more insight into what is involved. I have watched the Worl Press video and it makes it seem easy. But where do you start to let anyone know it is there!
Private replies are fine if you prefer, what ever.
Thanks again,
Wendy

First off, you need to pay for a hosting site. Nothing that is worth it, is free. You can get a hosting site for under $10 a month. This way, you have complete control over your blog and security as well. The video on Word Press is of great information. I would use that format.
I use Weebly.com for my photo's and they offer blogs as well. Don't go for the free stuff! Good luck

Wendy, I will be interested in the responses you receive. I created a website about midyear. Since then, as everyone else, I have been busy. I haven’t progressed with it as much as I had planned. The one thing I am doing is writing a blog from time to time. Since late June I have written 10 short blog posts, mostly about what I have photographed and where. I still have to connect PayPal to my website and add additional photographs and much more.

I will follow the responses posted here. I need to do so much more. One interesting issue is how to get recognized and create a following. Best of luck on your endeavor. I am sure you will be successful if you remain diligent.

Wendy,

I would suggest using Facebook and/or Pinterest to get a following to your blog or website. Also, I have used the free blogging service at www.wordpress.com for a blog/website combined. Yes. it may be limited but it's a good way to get started without the need of a paid site to host your blog or website, such as www.wordpress.org requires.

Wendy,
I have used the free Wordpress site to create/maintain a few different blog sites, I find it easy to use and the free features are all I need.

This is a web site we've just set up for the camera club I'm a member of, the only cost here was a small annual charge because we chose to purchase the .com domain name

http://craigieburncameraclub.com

This one is a site I've set up recently to document the different bird species I've photographed in a park near where I live

http://woodlandshistoricpark.wordpress.com

This one is a personal blog I maintained for a few years during a health/fitness, weight loss journey, it hasn't been maintained for over a year, but it is a New Year resolution to start doing so as I have put back on a fair bit of the weight again

http://ajhblog.wordpress.com

If you do decide to use Wordpress, I'd be glad to help in any way I can via UHH or email.

Andrew

Thanks Andrew. I think Word Press is the way to go. I do not do any of the 'social networking' sites. So I am still not sure how the word would get out? I intend to start at the beginning of january, although that is only a couple of days away! So yes please, help. Private message is just fine.
Thanks Again!

Hello again. One question I have before gathering photos for 'my blog' is what size and resolution they need to be. Also can they be 'lifted' off the site?
Again thank you.

Free works....I use Wordpress and have two blogs and they work fine for me...they look good and have no problems.

Here is the key...if you have content that people want to read and come back to...they won't care what platform it is...nor if you have a "real" hosting site or any of that...content rules.

Here is what my free wordpress blog looks like

Wendy, the answer to your question really depends on your intent. If the intent is to show off your photos, then they need to be big enough and good enough resolution to do so. This probably means big enough to fill a normal screen. It is pretty difficult to stop people swiping your photos, even if you take all the normal precautions they can always do a screen capture.

I use Flickr for my photos, then on the blog prefer just to link to the Flickr image. With Flickr you can store your original hi-res images, but restrict what size you let people download. You could also watermark if you want (I hate watermarks so don't use them, but this is a personal preference).

Regarding getting your blog "out there", if you're not a FB/Twitter person, just getting it out there on forums like this would go someway. Also, just searching for other similar blogs (not sure what your blog subject/type is) and leaving comments on other like-minded folks blogs will cause them to come look at yours, and I found with my personal blog, will be the start of long friendships.

Wendy,
I use a free Weebly site. My photos and blog posts are located there. Weebly allows you to remove the ability to copy photos by right clicking on them, but there are other ways to copy if someone is determined. You have to use your own judgment about photo size and resolution. Full-screen photos look good, but consider the time it will take to open up your gallery and blog. The longer it takes, the less likely a viewer will wait to see/read it.
