Happy New Year
Hi, First off, thanks for this forum.I have been lurking for some time now and have learned so much.I currently use a Sony cybershot DSC HX 100. When my budget can afford it, I hope to upgrade to upgrade to a Canon T3I or T4i. Two issues with my Sony. Not able to even put a filter on this camera due to threading. Also, is it possible to put a lens hood on this camera. I love shooting my beloved Black Skimmers, a beautiful bird here in FL. They come here to nest every May.When I take a pic of them skimming, the water, hence their name, the shots are blurry, even with a tripod.Any suggestions?

I'm not familiar with your camera but if you have the capability of using shutter priority, set it for at least 1/1000 sec and pan with the moving birds. Definitely lose the tripod. Auto focus might also help, if available. #1 looks like it might be suffering from more of a focus issue than a motion blur. Hope I was able to help.
Welcome to the Hog, Zoey. Can you control the shutter speed on this camera? If not try the Sports setting if you have that as it will set the camera to a higher shutter speed. Your camera may also take a little longer to establish focus than you are allowing before pressing the shutter fully down. I don't think you will find a hood but you can use your hand as a screen to act as a hood when needed. ;)
Hi, Thanks for you answer. I think my focusing is the issue as you suggest. My camera has a setting for manual focusing/ and auto zoom.on the lens. When I was shooting some birds today ( of course I mean taking pics) I noticed that a few were blurry on review and Voila, I had the setting for manual focus, but did not turn the ring to focus. Duh! Yes I can adjust the shutter with this camera and will try your suggestion about shutter speed. I have tried it with the sports setting, no success. I think what I might try is burst shooting with the shutter at 1/1000 sec...thanks..and now that I am on a roll.
What are some suggestions for shooting droplets in a waterfall? Adjust the depth of field?
Welcome, Zoey. Good to see someone soaking up good advice like a sponge from the super helpful people here. I've been doing the same and trying to help others as well. Looking forward to more from you, you've got a good eye. Just like me, getting used to all the settings for different types of photos can be daunting. Just stick with it. At least digital mess-ups are free! I learned a great deal from Tony Northrup's ebook from Amazon called How to Make Stunning Digital Photographs. It's designed for DSLR users, but you could learn a great deal for when that time comes. And he does explain the different scene modes on almost all cameras now, like the Sports mode suggested earlier to get you a fast shutter speed for those birds in flight. It's only $10.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try Amazon.
This camera can go to 1/4000 shutter speed, so you should be able to improve the pictures.
My DSC H@ is only 6mp and it does a fine job on moving objects.

[quote=zoeymcfee]Welcome Zoey. I always like to see any picture for inspection to click on "store original" You can do this on the post with the blurry bird. This allows closer checking, but also gives us camera settings data which we need. I will advise after you re-download. David

Hi zoey, welcome to the hog. I take it your sony cybershot is a point and shoot variety. It may have faster shutter speeds but normally p&s cameras are generally one speed. You will probably need a true DSLR to adjust the iso and speed. As for filters, you are right p&s cameras cannot take filters as they phase back into the camera body when not in use. Hope I've been some help.

Welcome aboard. You can get a good buy with the T3i cameras now that the T4i and T5i's are out. Checkout Greentoe.com

It looks to me that you not only have motion blur (too long shutter speed), but also the focus not on the subject (plus a tad more DOF couldn't hurt either)!!
S Peters, thanks for the suggestion. Yes I can adjust shutter speed ISO, aperture and white balance. I will try your suggestion with depth of field. David, I downloaded the book and you're right it's great. and the fact that a $5 credit on Amazon didn't hurt. and yes I will re upload the pic with the histogram information, although I think you are all right I need to refocus and change shutter speed as well. that's what's so great about about digital, unlike film cameras you can take as many pics as you like. well at least the size of your SD card. I just took a trip to Mexico, and guess who left their SD card in your computer left in for editing pics. hi ho off to Walmart I went.Next time I shoot a bird in flight I will upload the non blurry pic. thanks for all your help.
[quote=zoeymcfee]Zoey. You can download the histogram, but what I would like with the blurred bird is to re-post and check "store original". This will allow me to see all of the camera data. Thanks, David.
Hi David, I think the problem was with my focus. Here is another shot taken with the same camera. Much better results. agree? Also could I achieve better results with a Cannon T3! ( I like the fold out LCD screen) with a telephoto?
Thanks,
Heleen
