I am looking for something to capture lightning & meteor showers. I imagine a motion detector is probably not all that choosey in what it catches, but those are my particular interests.

There are a number of devices available made expressly for capturing lightning (a different challenge than meteors) - here's a chart for reference
Sorry to sound unintelligent but as someone who has never used or even seen one, can you explain the different features? And what would make one better than the other--there is a wide variety between the price.
no clue thats why i asked LOL

And here I thought the chart would show you the specific models that would enable you to do a little research - you could see what each manufacturer (or reviewer) says about the trigger in question.
Mind you, I don't use these things - I just know of their existence and have read reviews etc. out of curiosity - so I was merely trying to help you along. But that said, I can guess what the rest:
Open source - just if the software used in the device is proprietary (like Windows or OSX) or open source (Linux) - unless you want to really geek out with the thing this probably won't make a difference.
reactive lightning trigger - the thing that makes it go "click" when a lighting strike is about to happen - as you can see they pretty much all have that (else they wouldn't be on the list)
dual camera - a guess here, but simply that the unit can control two cameras simultaneously
laser trigger - the trigger can operate off a broken laser beam (to capture a quickly moving object like a drop of water or a bullet going through a playing card)
sound trigger - hmmm - pops the flash off when a sound (like a popping champagne cork or fired bullet?) occurs
motion sensor - pop the flash when something moves
time lapse - set it like an intervalometer (i.e. - one shot every half second, or every 3 minutes, or whatever) to assemble the finished shots into a time-lapse movie
auxiliary port - allows for the attachment of some other sensor to trigger based on that
fully assembled - this means you don't have to put it together.
But really, if you are interested I strongly suggest you investigate these units to see which fits your needs and budget the best. I merely wanted to give you a list to make that easier.
much appreciated!!! all pretty much out of the budget range for the time being. but your effort & thought mean much to me.
