Here are a few photos from last summer when I visited Marietta sand prairie here in Marshall County Iowa. I've lived here all my life and had never heard of this, but it's 230 acres of sand prairie. The day I visited I was the only one there, and had the run of the place. There are mown paths so it's easy to get around and they have some signs up to identify some of the plants. It was a great day and now that snow covers everything here it's good to look back on this. I had told Marxgo in another thread that I would post some, so here they are.
The last one with the one eyed susans is very pretty. Interesting landscape.

Thanks ebrunner for looking. I was amazed to find it nearly in my back yard.
I missed your post the other day and just now thought to search for the pictures. Thanks for posting. Neat pictures. I definitely have this down on my list of places to go. What time of year were you there. Maybe spring or summer? Do they have an information center there? I looked "sand" prairie up. I didn't realize there were different kinds of prairie as far as the soil. Another place I heard of but haven't been on the east side of Iowa, is Lake Iowa Park near Ladora. They have a bird blind there. I met up with some fellow photographers at Prairie City and they told me about that.

These were taken in very early August. There is no information center there. I don't know if they ever have any events there or not. I think I'm going to try to get back there in the spring - maybe mid to late May. I'm sure things look much different then.
