Need info on Canon 17-85mm EFS lens

I have questions about the Canon 17-85mm efs lens.
What is the full time manual function feature?
Is it a good walk around lens?
Is it better than the 18-55mm kit lens?
Will it work with the Canon T3i?
What is the quality of the lens?
Thanks for the answers.

What is the full time manual function feature? There's a switch for full time manual focus - it just switches autofocus on and off
Is it a good walk around lens? It hasn't any legs so it can't walk
Is it better than the 18-55mm kit lens? Not much better - but it has more focal range since it goes to 85mm instead of 55mm
Will it work with the Canon T3i? Yes
What is the quality of the lens? It will take nice pictures but it's nowhere near professional quality
Thanks for the answers.

What is the full time manual function feature? The full-time manual focus means that you can half-press the shutter button to auto-focus, then before releasing the shutter you can trim the focus manually using the focus ring. On lesser lenses, such as the kit lens, if you try this you can strip the focus gears.
Is it a good walk around lens? I keep mine on my camera all the time, just changing to a tele-zoom when the 85mm is too short.
Is it better than the 18-55mm kit lens?Yes, definitely
Will it work with the Canon T3i?Yes, I have it on the almost identical T2i
What is the quality of the lens?I am happy with the results from mine (although less happy with its reliability - the autofocus has been replaced twice). However, I've never used an L lens. I understand the newer 15-85 is a bit better
Thanks for the answers.

I owned / used this lens with an XTi for about 6-months. The results were excellent except for a few challenges as follows:

1. The lens struggles when focusing on a subject at about 2-feet or less from the camera / lens. The results lack a strong focus.
2. When shooting well lighted objects at night, there's a good deal of chromatic aberration. This can be fixed in post processing but the sharpness of the picture suffers.
3. There's a good deal of lens creep. This can be corrected with a strong rubber band or a branded LensBand.

There are better lenses, yes. But this lens performs well for general purposes at a lower cost than those other lenses. I sold the lens after upgrading to an L lens that overlapped at the same focal lengths and the EF-S wasn't getting much use.

I have had two copies of this lens and it is a great all around lens with pretty good quality, a much better build than the 18-55 kit lens and greater reach. On the Canon crop sensor cameras, you need a lens like this when you are shooting people indoors, as, with the multiplier effect, it gives you around a 26-27 on the wide side, perfect for shooting people inside. I have also had and recommend the 18-200 Canon lens. I have heard good things about the 15-85 EFS lens, but have not used it. The attached pics were all recently taken with that lens on a 50D body

Thanks for the answers. I think I will try this lens out. I'll be posting some photos from it within the next two weeks. Have a safe New Year's, Hoggers.

You may wish to consider the newer EF-S 15-85mm lens, or the new Sigma 17-70mm lens.
