It seems I have to learn the hard way

I went out to photograph a bird in the top of a tree. So I set my camera up at f16 and 1/200 sec. Big mistake. When I crested a berm I frightened a gaggle of geese. I will, from now on, always preset it to 1/500 or faster when the Big Sig is on.

Why did you feel f16 was required for a bird sitting in a tree?
You probably could have been set closer to 1000 shutter (or faster) with lens at wider aperture (up the ISO if necessary) and been ready to stop action on a flight shot if that tree top bird suddenly took off or if other flying birds came into view.

Also were you hand holding that big lens at 1/200?
If so camera shake could be a consideration I would think.
Looks like you had nice lighting conditions so why not just start off with a faster shutter speed?

The second one is good. The first one is spoiled by the busy background, but I think the blur just makes the action. Course, what do I know?

I did have my tripod with me, and was about to chose a location for it. As for the f16, I wanted to have a better depth of field to pull more of the frosted branches of the tree into focus. The crow was not the reason for the picture, the frosted branches were and the crow was my accent.
I learn something each time I go out. You are also right on all points
