Lens Manual Focus Switch

Someone told me that I should always make sure to switch to manual focus on my lens before removing or reattaching to my camera.

Is there any merit to this procedure? I've never done this. Of course, I always make sure my camera is powered off, but I never toggle the switch to manual on my lens. Thoughts?

First I have heard of this, I always turn my camera off. Mostly so that it recognizes the lens properly ! We shall see what the knowledge pool tells us. Good question!

Same here.
Also while installing/removing flash.

A camera should be off when installing or removing a lens but I have never heard of switching a lens to manual before removing or installing it. ;)

Never heard about turning the AF on the off before and I've never had any issues with it.

Weren't there some older film cameras that did autofocus via an extendable pin? Or was that just exposure?

Yep, never had a problem with those either.

Only thing I've ever been warned about both by the Nikon D5200 manual and the gurus here is to make sure your camera is off and VR is off on the lens when taking a lens on or off of the body. The lens supposedly makes a nasty clunk that doesn't harm anything if you don't follow this advice.

I've heard you should turn off IS on lenses that have them before removing or attaching the lens, but not autofocus.

Thanks for the quick replies. My brother-in-law actually told me this, and he said he read it in Outdoor Photographer magazine. I'll ask him to provide the page and issue number. Perhaps he misread something.

I'm a computer guy. I make more money off of people who have brothers-in-law that "know something about computers". It's like stealing...

I don't think you have to turn IS/VR off either. That gets power from the camera, so turning the camera off should basically stop that also.

Good question Mark. Most of us turn the camera off when changing lenses but this takes it a step further.
I've never heard of going to manual focus but, it's worthwhile calling the camera manufacturer.
I called Nikon Canada a couple times some years back and was always treated with courtesy and got an answer for different issues.

LOL.

Sadly, he asked me if this were true and what the reasoning might be. I told him I had never heard this, but that I would ask the "Oracle" (i.e. UHH forum). :-)

The Nikon D800 manual says:
Quote:
Be sure the camera is off when removing or exchanging lenses. To remove the lens, press and hold the lens release button (q) while turning the lens clockwise (w). After removing the lens, replace the lens caps and camera body cap.

Nothing about turning the switch to manual.
