Help! I am looking to buy either the nikon d7100 or the canon 70d. I am into photography as a hobby but would like to get into it deeper on a non-professional level. I would be doing mostly sports, outdoor skiing, snowmobiling shots and nature, scenic shots..

I would like a camera that is a little weather resistant as well.

Any help appreciated!!!

I started searching for pretty much the same a few weeks ago.

Looking at the side by side comparisons, they look to be almost identical in features...Maybe one would feel better in your hands than the other. Maybe try to handle both...Either would give you good results...

I can vouch for the D7100, it has been built with pretty good weather sealing and with the magnesium body shell, it's also very sturdy...
Undoubtedly both great cameras but this seems to be the main difference...the Canon does video better and the D7100 has better image quality....the video part doesn't worry me, it's plenty good enough but I very rarely use it anyway...
Ron.

Between the two, if you have no brand or lens loyalty, then I would choose the D7100. Yes, I'm a Canon user.

True; BOTH are great cameras.

Check out this shootout... one of the best I have seen:

^^^VERY well done by a seemingly neutral presenter.

Let me ALSO suggest the Sony Alpha A77... the camera both Nikon AND Canon designed their cameras to compete against.

Watch this too...

Each of the three does something EXTREMELY well that the other two don't.

Let me add that because of the upcoming Spring 2014 release of a replacement model, that the price of the A77 is MUCH lower than either the D7100 or the 70D, and with similar or superior performance, it deserves SERIOUS consideration. ;)

I have the D5200 and love it and it's features, but it's not a good all weather camera like the D7100. From everything I've read, it's a great body. I just wish it had the rotatable LCD monitor the D5200 has, which is very handy for short guys like me when you need to get shots above the crowd or from a low angle without laying on your belly. There are always compromises. For the extra money, you get more performance, like 6fps instead of 5fps in continuous mode, 1/8000 shutter speed vs 1/4000, 2-5 frame exposure bracketing vs only 3 exposures on the D5200, etc. Well worth the extra money and it or it's successor will probably be my next upgrade, since all of my glass will work with it. Good luck, I don't think it's possible to make a bad decision, just try each one out before you buy. One may just feel "right" to you.

Looking at the stats, both cameras are neck & neck except the D7100 is supposed to have better image quality.

For pure photographic image quality, due to the lack of a low pass filter, I would give the D7100 the edge. I also like dual card slots. If Video is a major part of your intended use I would say lean toward the Canon 70D. faster continuous focus in video mode with it's phase focus system. I have compared both in both modes and my opinion is based on a completely un-scientific, totally subjective evaluation. I think either would delight

I'm very disappointed, Wabbit, that Bugs and Daffy weren't in this fight. :-(
