Florida East Coast Location Suggestion

We are heading over to Florida's east coast tomorrow for 2-3 days. Definitely hitting Merritt Island and possibly Ft. Pierce/Hutchinson Island.

Looking for a beach where surf would crash against some rocks. Probably not your touristy beach. :-) I remember one somewhere, but darned if I remember where.

Also, any hidden or uncommon photo ops would be great to know.

Try Washington Oaks Park. There is a coquina beach there. Not many rocks in Florida, but this one is just north of Daytona.

Merry Christmas

Dave

Blowing Rocks Reserve in Hobe Sound, natural rock formations with crashing surf and blowholes, Brett, however it is closed on New Years Day, and major holidays. You can google them in and find directions etc

Hey Brett, come on up here. We have 30 mph winds with snow. Great places to watch the waves hit the rocks too!! You would be the talk of the town. Just think, snow ice and water. What fun. :):)

Oh, forgot. Bring your long johns.:):)

Uhhhh, thanks for the offer, but been there, done that. No pressing desire to do it again. At least for now.

Agree Blowing Rocks was great when we lived near by. There was no entrance back then. We had to park along A1A and follow a dirt path through the trees. It was just an isolated stretch of beach and rocks with good snook fishing.

There are some rocks on the beach by the House of Refuge which is a museum on the beach at the southern end of Hutchinson island. There are also some great views over the river towards one of the bridges. As you are driving south along hutchinson island take a left on Macarthur Boulevard just before the Marriott hotel. The museum is a couple of miles or so along that road. Have fun!

While you are in the Merritt Island area you may want to drive over to Port Canaveral, and look around Jetty Park. There is a lighthouse across the channel from Jetty. It is located on the Cape, which may be restricted, but can be photographed. This lighthouse looks much like one of the old missiles which were launched there. Many people setup on launch days and expected this lighthouse to blast off. When I lived there you could drive through Kennedy Space Center, and end up at US 1. You will pass the KSC display area, you really can't miss it. There is a Saturn 5 on its side on display, plus other interesting displays of the old programs, and some of the newer ones. There are also tours of the Space Port, showing the VAB, Launch Control, and other buildings and spaces used during the old "space race"

Well we only did Merritt Island, as far as nature type stuff, but I made notes of the other places mentioned here. Thanks again.

Looks like the hours for Merritt Island have changed, since we went there last year around this time. We went to Black Point just before sunrise and the gate was closed. Didn't open until about 7:15. I know we went in much earlier than that last year.

The bird population seemed WAY down for this time of year, compared to last year. Maybe that's because we couldn't get in until later, and many had taken off for the day? We did see many large flocks flying off while we sat at the gate. Oh well.

You might try the state park in Ft. Pierce. The inlet from the ocean to the intercoastal is there and between the rocks at the inlet and the many ships that pass by, I've seen some great shots. Just an idea. Oh, there is a fee for the park. I believe $5 or less. Have fun.
