Blue jays in flight (with Canon SX 50)

It's difficult to catch these fast flyers with the SX 50 because of the slow focus. I tried these in TV 1/1000 and it picked F 5.6 and iso 320. I shot them in RAW and lightened the exposure in Elements 12. They're certainly not perfect, but it's a start.

Excellent shots! Also try the High Speed Burst mode, found in the Scenes zones! Page 106 in the manual. I use this a lot, and it's quite good in the wildlife centers and nature preserves. You have to get used to it and see how it works but it does! It just doesn't shoot it in raw if that's what you want. Thanks for sharing.

Forgot to mention, it shoots about 10 shots per second, focuses the first shot and maintains that focus for the burst. Seems to work! Happy shooting! DL

Thank you Wahawk! There's still a lot I have to learn to use it to its full potential.

They look good! It'd be hard to get anything else done with all this action and drama right in my own backyard :)

I've used the burst mode for last couple of eagle posts. I love how it works, though with the distance I shoot, it's hard to compare quality. As Dlevon mentioned, you don't re-focus, so something moving parallel to you will work best.

Great pics & good tips. I got an SX50 a couple of weeks ago and am still discovering secrets on it. Thanks for all the tips.

One big secret revealed: call Canon and ask them to mail you a FREE user manual

These are really good!!! It's hard to get BIF with a SX50--- at least for me it is.
