Anybody know how to trigger an external flash wirelessly on a Canon 6D? I know how to do it on the 7D but the 6D has not pop-up flash.

Three options.

1) Wireless trigger. One for the Hot shoe and one for the flash.
2) Hardwired cable. The correct cable type and length should be explained on a reputable camera sight like B&H or Adorama.

3) I use the 600EXRT (4 of them). Expensive solution but probably the finest flash on the market because of it's radio wireless capability built in. The system works flawless for me.
You still need one flash in the hot shoe or an ST-E3-RT controller in the hotshoe.

I get using option 1. I have 2 cactus-4 triggers. But I have 2 external flash units (430exII and yn650iii) how can I trigger both flashs with only 2 triggers? Seems like I would need another Cactus-4 trigger.

Here's what I found:

trigger multiple speedlights with a simple YN RF603c tranceiver.
tranceiver shoe goes on foot of first speedlight
A. Connect a sync cord from PC sync port of RF603c to 2nd speedlight
(or use a PC===Simple Shoe cable & put on speedlight foot)
B. Connect a 3-way splitter to RF603c PC port with cable.
Connect up to 3 additional speedlights via the splitter (from eBay years ago)

Google Daisy Chain Speedlights for more info.

I must confess I haven't done this.

Optical triggering is also an option. I'm not sure if your speedlights do this.

Wouldn't it be easier to set one trigger on camera (as a transmitter) to fire the 430 flash set on the other trigger (as a receiver) and use the optical slave mode of the YN 560 III (triggered by the flash of the 430 flash?

That's what I was thinking to do.

I don't think the 430 can be used as a master; only a slave. The 580exII could be used as a master for the other flashes.

It won't...but when the 430EXII goes off, the optical slaves will flash in response.

The 430ex can only operate as a slave.
An ST-E2 will work as a transmitter as well as a 580ex as a master.

I'm confus-ed. If there is an optical slave that will react to a flash going off, why is the flash going off on a 430 any different from the flash going off on a 580 ... or a ProMaster, or another YN flash, or whatever? What do I not understand here?

It's not.

The YN flashes (and many others) have an optical slave, so that it doesn't matter WHAT flash is going off (even the camera flash), they will react.

What's confusing is people are talking about slaves and masters in the same conversation which is a slightly different thing. A master flash can be used to adjust power and things on the remote slaves...which is different than an optical slave just firing in response to a flash going off.

Hopefully that clears things up a bit.

I have 6D with no popup so I need a trigger for the slave.

Right. Your 6D will not provide "built in" flash so using a wireless trigger is a good alternative.

You COULD (hopefully this doesn't confuse things) put your 430EXII on the camera, point it straight up...turn it down to it's lowest power setting (on manual) and THAT will trigger an optical flash also but not contribute to the overall exposure.

But to me...that's a hassle. I'd only do that if my triggers were broken or the batteries ran out.

Hi gemlenz, I have the Yongnuo Flashes working with my Canon 6D and I use the YN 560II, YN565EX, YN 568EX to include the YN622C one for each flash and 1 on Camera works flawlessly OUTSTANDING flashes and transceivers.
