Right after Christmas I want to buy a lens for my granddaughter in which she has a Canon XTI. I'm looking at getting her a 55 -250is or 75 - 300 lens. will I be getting any thing different with these two lens or should I h=just buy them both. My granddaughter is just starting out and is also taking a photography class.

Personally, I would not buy lenses that overlap that much in focal length. But as to which Canon lenses to get, I'll leave that to the Canon shooters.

I would recommend the Tamron SP 70-300 with VC - sharp and super light weight. - and reasonable $

Just the lens that came with the camera. I think it is 55-150 but not real sure as she has the camera.

If she has the lens that came with the camera it may be 18-55 which seems to be the standard kit lens that comes with the newer Canon rebels. If that is the case I would go with the Canon 55-250.

Why the long telephoto? Does she want lots of tele work? If not, I would suggest the canon 28-135.

There are various internet sites that have reviews of almost any lens. Just type in the lens description and add review to the end an you can find several reviews that could be very useful to you.

Good idea. Go to canonusa.com, all of Canon's lenses are listed along with reviews. That is a good place to start. You could also go the BH website, they will also have Canon lenses plus lenses from other manufacturers, plus customer reviews. There is a lot to be learned just from reading the reviews. There are many good lenses out there, be sure you order the one with canon mount.

I like photozone.de for reviews. They have technical reviews along with user reviews. The user reviews are not as precise obviously.

Correct, some user reviews are questionable, some hard to understand. The professional reviews like photozone will be the best.

Why not the Tamron 18-270 ? Covers a wide range, good reviews, sharp, economically priced.
