how do you rate this lens? I note it has a "hybrid" IS system, but am not exactly sure what that means.....

I have this lens and love it. I would rate it an excellent lens. The "Hybrid" IS system with a 4 stop compensation.
I started with macro photography last summer and bought that lens.

Some info of the lens:

Some samples using the lens on my first try. I do need more skill improvements on my macro shots.

Cannot add any more than this other than to say I love the lens. If you buy one you won't regret it.

Haha, just realised after I posted that this is the lens I'm holding up in my avatar.

Several Canon photographers on the UHH True Macro-Photography Forum use this lens on a daily basis. Take a look: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html

I bought the lens on the recommendation of the Hoggers and am very happy with it . Used it often during the summer since many of the critters I want to photograph are active at that time . I would recommend the lens to anyone who wants to explore the mini world of flora and fauna.

Bought this lens years ago, this is one of the first shots I took with it, never regretted getting it.
Also attached a recent shot of a little frog.

GREAT lens! One of my favorites, and not just for close-ups.

As others have said, it is a very good lens. Before I switched from Canon 5D to Pentax I had the L lens. At the time I wasn't sure if I wanted the Canon L or the Sigma 105 F2.8 Macro. Both have IS. I ordered them both and ended up keeping the Canon. Below is a link to what I thought of both lens. This isn't a very good test because the photos were not the same and under the same conditions. I thought both were about equal in quality, but if hand holding I thought the Canon L had a better IS.
