Happy Holidays to all!!

I recently bought an EOS M and am blown away by the quality of the pictures! I have both lenses that are made for the camera but was wondering if anyone can recommend a good telephoto lens.

Have a safe and happy holiday!

I would think that the adaptor would be the only way to go, as there are not a lot of native lenses for the system (as I understand it).

are you running the latest firmware? Supposedly there are some MAJOR improvements by doing so.

The new firmware was installed on the camera when I installed the software on my computer, so that's a go. And I know that there is an adapter for the Canon EF and EF-S lenses. Coming from point-and shoot, I'm just not well versed on what a good telephoto lens would be for this camera.

My Canon M is under the Christmas tree. I have a Canon 7D already. I have one piece of good glass because it was in my price range. I am waiting for tomorrow to give this a try. If you are just starting you might consider the same lens, Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM Lens. Small enough to use to walk around and the quality is excellent.

Still need the adaptor for the 70-200, right?

Yes, the adapter is required for any Canon EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses.

Does the M have the std crop of 1.6, or is it more? ;-)

In the absence of you stating what you want a longer lens for, it is a bit difficult to make any real valid suggestions to you. I shoot primarily a Canon 5D2 with various lens and just recently bought an EOS-M
with the adapter and I intend to use all my lens on the EOS-M from ultra wide angle through the 400mm 5.6, one of the sharpest lens Canon makes. I use a 70-200 2.8 IS II about as much as anything, that and the 1.4x II TC. I also have the 100mm 2.8 IS Macro that gets a lot of action. A lot of people use the 100-400 IS zoom with great success and it is very sharp although not quite as sharp as the 400mm 5.6, or so the tests say. The 400mm 5.6 is the smallest 400mm Canon makes, is light enough to hand hold very comfortably, and can be bought at a price less than any other Canon lens with that kind of distance reach. Here is a url to a comparative analysis/review of Canon's options in that range at a site that is the 5th most visited photo site on the Internet: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/forgotten-400.shtml

If you are planning on using your EOS-M for video, which it does exceptionally well, I would be interested in the EF 18-135 STM IS zoom lens which would also be an excellent general purpose lens and almost a necessity for mid-range zoom for video which is what it was designed for to be used on the T4i, T5i, 70D, and EOS-M to permit automatic focus tracking which is only built into those 4 cameras.

FOR SHARPSHOOTER ...and yes, SHARPSHOOTER, the EOS-M has the 1.6 crop factor and also has the digic 5 processor. It also has a touch screen and has a mix of features of the lastest T?i and the more advanced 70D. It makes a nice crop sensor traveling partner for a 5D2 or 5D3 and the price is right since Canon decided to discontinue it because it got some bad reviews associated with being "slow," especially the focus system, and not having a viewfinder although it does have a larger and highly advanced LCD screen. I put a real fast card in mine and it sped up a very noticable amount. I expect an upgrade out almost immediately since Canon are building new lens with that mount, the latest one being an 11-22mm STM IS lens that is currently not available as a U. S. model but can be bought from Hong Kong for around $500.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

Thanks for the reply and the input. You've given me a lot to consider (like why I really need a telephoto lens) and to look into. As I learn more and more about the camera, I guess I'll be better able to define what my real needs are.

Have a Happy New Year!!
