I realize that SD Card files created on one camera cannot be read on another---is there a way around this? I have some photos that I shot on my D5000 that I would like to have my D5100 read so I can I view them on my 1080 HDTV.

Remove them from the D5000's DCIM folder and re-store them on the D5100's DCIM folder using your computer. So long as you have not edited the original JPG files that will do the trick.

In another thread a few days ago it was determined that Nikons will create a new folder on the SD card when you move the card from one camera to the other. Both cameras would display the photos of the other if you navigate to the folder.

There are easier ways if they are .jpgs. Many TVs and Blu-Ray Players have USB ports. A $5 SD card reader will display the .jpgs on your TV.

If you want to do this a lot, look at a "WD TV Live" for about $100. It connects to your TV with HDMI, accepts anything you can plug into its USB ports and gives you a remote for navigation.

Thanks. I'm trying to use a mini HDMI cable to get high def. so a simple SD card reader doesn't work.

With respect, I think you are mistaken. It is the file, not the cord that provides the "high def".

I have three BD players, four HD TVs and three (soon four) cameras that make .jpgs and 1080p60 video. One (soon two) make RAWs. I have played with and used about every combination over the last three years since I started this evil digital imaging hobby. Kodachromes and Carousels were so much intuitive!

My experience is that viewing .jpgs and MP4s are the same when played from a camera to a TV on HDMI or direct with a card reader. It is also the same if you copy the .jpgs to a DVD or Blu-Ray disk as data. Some Blu-Ray players will even read .jpgs off of a CD.

1080p60 video and RAW photos are more of a challenge.

One notable exception to ease of use is that if you are using a Sony camera on a Sony TV or a Panasonic Camera on a Panasonic TV with mini HDMI there are conveniences. There is instant recognition and the TV Remote will run the cameras playback.
