A lot on here like the Rebel T3i. I think that would fit your budget. The T5i is more unless you might find a refurbished model for a good price at Canon online store and then search for refurbished camera's. Why not stick with Nikon though? Or if bent on switching and wanting lightweight, I would seriously research micro 4/3 systems either Olympus or Panasonic...

I'm not sure if the epl5 2 lens kit is still on sale. It was 499 or 599.

Just making a suggestion based off of someone else's comment about something lighter that they will carry with them everyday...no need to get your knickers in knot...besides, I'm sure you were going to suggest your beloved SX50 :-) Besides the EPL5 will perform equally as well as a one of the Ti series cameras, but will be 100% more portable...something the OP may not have known about. Boy, I outta post a picture of it too, to really piss you off.

You need to join JR1 on the suspended list!
Notice I didn't say anything about any P&S or bridge cameras!! I don't know details about the Canon dSLRs but do know that what you suggested was NOT a Canon!!

Go ahead, push the button...pissy this morning, aren't we? Go put some Baileys in your coffee...scratch that skip the baileys and coffee and go have some JACK on the rocks and chill out.

Back to the OP's post.
The SL1 is the smallest canon DSLR. I suppose that would hit your price point. Personally, the M series camera is much smaller, and even though it just came out with a new firmware update, there's no way that I'd touch that camera. Canon jumped into the mirrorless party too late, and they're trying to catch up to Panasonic, olympus and Sony.

While I don't agree with the their scoring (popularity contest), it does give you a side by side of the two suggested cameras.

For what you are wanting to do, and at the price point you have set for yourself, you will only be able to buy used, and that's a crap-shoot at best.
Upping the ante or lowering your expectations are your only real options at this time.

Welcome!

Now I am a Canon user. So I would like to say welcome to Canon. But, why the switch from Nikon? Do you have any money in lenses from the D70?

There is the EOS-M since you say you want a DSLR and light weight. It also has advanced auto focus and tracking for video. And it is $599.99 just under you $600. Up a bit is the Rebel SL1 at $750.

Everything else is going to be bigger and heavier than you appear to want.

I still wonder about the switch from Nikon.

Just curious: are you switching away from Nikon or to Canon, and why?

Not so sweet when you look at the performance specs.
in comparing the M to the epl5.

Strange comparison. I have never comapered the 5D mark III with a Hasselbad.

The Olympus is more than twice the price. It had better have some better specs.
