Well, I Am 70, so congratulations on making it to this advanced age.
No one seems to ask what you like to shoot and what do you find missing in your photography that you hope to achieve with a new body (the camera, not you. That's a whole 'nother subject!). If you are seeking better low light performance, get the FX body. You might also consider a used 700 which is the way I would go having shot with them for years before I upgraded to D4's and 800's.
On the other hand, if you have much in the way of glass or if low light is not your holy grail, then stay DX.
The camera you have now can best be described as a Ferrari engine in a Pinto body. The sensor in that camera is pro class, so I would not consider a 5100 as I don't think you gain enough to justify the expense.
I've been a Nikon shooter since 1957.
I am a professional photographer and I use the much less expensive Nikon D7000. It is far and away the best camera I've ever used, will do anything you would ever possibly want to do and should last you forever. Like any camera I've ever used the D7000 will only take photos as good as the person pressing the shutter button feeds it. Do not expect that buying a better camera is going to somehow vastly improve your images because it's not going to happen. I teach photography to people with more dollars than sense who bring cameras costing much, much, much more than mine and at trip's end guess who has the best photos?
All best!
Hey Bill thanks for that good info.I'm thinking the 7100 is what I need. D610 is much more than I need.
Thanks Glider for that valuable input. It's been a rocky road getting here but I made it, bypass at 59 and several days after still in hospital, had stroke that took out my left side, after extensive therapy a month later out of hospital!
For me, between the two, I'd rather have the 7100...it's lighter (not by much) and the dynamic range is still really good for a cropped sensor. To me, unless you are a pro or have an endless budget, leave the FF to them, unless you are wanting to be on the cutting edge with the Sony A7/A7r, and cut 1/2 the weight.

Just my 2 cents, Slick...
I just picked up the d610 with 2 kit lenses and couldn't be happier. Yes, that's right - I'm using the kit lenses and have no complaints. Also, I picked up the 50mm 2.8 prime lens at B&H ($216.00) and can't put it down. Add my brief comments to some of the other D610 mentions and you might have a winner - depending on your needs. Remember, it's not the camera, it's the photographer!

I'm about to turn to the big 70 and want to buy myself a nice b day present. I'm looking at the nikon d610 and d7100. Any thoughts or input on which one would be helpfull. Currently have the d3100. Not a pro photographer!
Just did that and bought myself a D300s, it is not full frame and most all lenses will work with it. It is going to be my main camera until I can get the D700. Neither are in production anymore but are still good cameras.I paid $780.00 for mine with the Nikon battery grip. Good deal. It had 4895 shutter activations and is build for 150,000 but have seen some with over 275,00. There are still some brand new bodies on ebay for amout $1250.00 or so. Good luck.

You don't say which lenses you have. That might influence the decision.
Both cameras are excellent. It would depend on your shooting preferences.
The D610 is better at low light and the images will be cleaner. It will cost nearly twice as much. It will use DX lenses but at a reduction in pixel count.
The D7100 gives more reach and is less expensive. It is better suited for birds and wildlife. It will handle both FX and DX lenses with out reducing the pixel count.
The difference between them is not that great for every day shooting. Coming from the camera you current have both would impress.

Take the difference in cost and also buy the lens you've been drooling over! :-)
WOW, that is one BEAUTIFUL shot ! !

I have a D7100 and dearly love it. Decided i just had to have the bigger, badder 610.
see:

It was one of the few times G.A.S. has been averted
by other photographers!
You must get any camera you are considering purchasing in your hands. If weight is an issue investigate the new Nikon DF. I love Nikon, but I'm switching to mirror less because of weight. So far I love the Fugi X-E2 which I bought a month ago.
