An interview with gatega1958,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I used to sneak into my parent's closet and get their camera. I think it was some sort of Kodak. It's been something I've enjoyed for as long as I can remember.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No, no formal training other than a class in high school. We shot mostly black and white and processed our own. I like all kinds of photography--I'm always tinkering and playing--but my current interest is in attempting to take photographs of older women in such a way that they will see their beauty.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I was thinking about Nelson Mandela's hell while in prison. How would I feel if I couldn't express myself by writing? I noticed my husband penning his Christmas cards and grabbed my camera. He said my flash blinded him for ten minutes, but that's a small price to pay for my art, right?

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I have a Nikon D7000 and a 105 lens. No special setup, but I did use an "antique plate" filter to lend it some moodiness in post-processing.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
Maybe have his hands closer and a bit more angled. But I didn't ask him to pose for me, so it is what it is.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
What else is there? Hmmm...I'd be a writer prone towards mischief. By the way, big thanks to all you Hedgehogs. I learn everyday because of your input, ideas, and arguments.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Thanks for asking! I do have a bunch of my stuff on Fine Art America. While nothing has sold, I've had some nice comments.

Ground rules for the photography competition at UHH:

"Please shoot your photo during the challenge week.
Entries that do not follow the theme will be deleted.
Entries without a title or description will be deleted."

I'm confused. The first rule for the competition (in the above directions) apparently requires that photos be shot "during the challenge week." Yet the "shot taken" date of three of the four highest-rated photos does not apparently follow this rule. So which is it? Shot during the competition or...shot anytime?

This is not a case of sour grapes, just a simple request for clarification. Thanks.

I understand your question, and have wondered about that too. In the end I remember I can't control anyone else's behavior (nor would I want to!) and therefore act within my personal set of values.

I like the challenge of seeing and creating something that fits the contest theme on the week it is presented. Others may feel differently, or that their best work is represented by a shot taken at a different time. It doesn't change the question, "Why have rules if they are not enforced?" but it sure makes me happier.

Hey u02bnpx, it is great to hear from you and I appreciate your comments.
To clarify, the rules says Please... in the hope that you will shoot within the challenge time frame, but does not exclude you if you do not.
There was a vote about this awhile back and in the end the two camps were fairly equal.
- For the time frame - excludes those who cannot
- Against the time frame - allows everyone to have fun
You, or anyone else, are always free to bring it back up in a separate post and discus it, but for now I leave to the member to decide.
- Do I pull archived photos, or
- Do I challenge myself
Steve

Thanks for the clarification, Steve. I was unaware that a vote had been taken on the matter, and I can see why it was split. So now the decision is mine to make. I like the challenge factor, but many of us are more limited now (because of age, weather, etc.) than we were when shooting in our "prime." No pun intended.

When I first started this it was about the challenge, but really meant for everyone to have fun. The funny part running it though is that you have to think of weather. It may be snowing in North America, but sunny and hot in Africa. Even in North America it may be snowing in Northern California, but in Los Angeles we are walking around in T-shirts. Holidays are the same. I can run Christmas, but not everyone celbrates.
It has been an interesting journey and I am glad you are with us. If there is anything I can do to make it more fun or if you have suggestions please feel free to let me know. Steve
