I have a 2year old iMac with a 27 inch monitor and would like some opinions on which monitor calibration units work the best.

Price is a consideration, but I would like to consider them all

Personally I use a Spyder 2.
But the A/V guy at my pro group uses a ColorMunki.
I think it isn't so much what you use, but that you're doing it at all.

I looked at the adds for colorMunki and the prices vary from $80 to $400. Is there a particular model that you have seen better results with?

I'd get the ColorMunki Display. It calibrates your monitor only. The other one, which is more expensive, calibrates your monitor and paper. I have that one and don't find it as useful as I had hoped for the paper. Each of these are around $350-$400 something.

I have and use the "Colormunki Display". I previously used a couple of different Spyder units, including paper calibrations, and the Colormunki does a better job.
For most purposes, the manufacturers printer profiles are more than adequate, and printers are enormously more stable than monitors. I find it sufficient to use the Colormunki frequently (about five or six minutes), and stay with my Pro 9500 Mk2 manufacturer's calibration.
I admit that it is occasionally necessary to tweak a print for best appearance, but that is rare. Be careful to be certain the program know the paper in use at any particular time.
Truly large printers like my Epson 9800 are a whole different ball game.

I use a Spyder2 pro. The software pops up every two weeks to suggest running it. The first time it took a while, but thereafter its only a few minutes.

With the Canon Pro 9500 Mk2 I have been using just Canon papers and always select the ICC when printing with an application.

For some reason (laziness) I was convinced the Apple OS kept everything working right. Someone showed me the difference on a calibrated screen.

Color munki is between $100-200. I bet if you find a webinar at the end there is a discount offering.
