In some cases when you order from Amazon your order is being filled by a UPS employee who selects your purchase, packages your purchase to be shipped, applies the label and then your order is sent to be shipped according to the delivery method you specified.
In some instances if the order is a third party or not shipped from an Amazon center my take longer to arrive than an item that is available.
Amazon upped it's requirements for free shipping from $25 to $50 a few weeks ago.

While UPS does indeed perform fulfillment (as it is called) for many companies, I do not believe Amazon is one of them - Amazon has something like 19 or 20 distribution centers in the US and actually performs fulfillment for some of the companies whose products they list. So I believe @Dun1 is off base on this.

I agree. I've seen 2 different prices, looking at the same item from the same vendor, but several hours apart.

Yep. This has happened to me as well... supply & demand.

I am fully aware that Amazon has fulfillment centers scattered throughout the US.
However a friend of mine was an upper echelon manager for UPS.He brought up the subject that in many instances, either via phone or placing an internet order UPS employees, select the item the customer ordered, and prepare it to be shipped

I knew that UPS had (has?) fulfillment service available, but never saw, and can't find any reference to, Amazon using them.
I looked at their website and found them touting other fulfillment services as being UPS ready.

No mention of their own fulfillment service.

FedEx does market their service.
