Went to a camera store today and rented an extender ef-1.4-II hooked it up to my 100x400L on a 7d and no auto focus through the view finder put it on live view and AF works fine,Am I doing something wrong? Thanks Bill.
Probably not. I don't have a 7D, but do have a 5D Mk III. For the 5D Mk III, Canon just recently released a firmware update for the camera to allow the use of center cross-hair AF at F8 when using the 100-400 lens with the 1.4x II extender (as well as the I and III versions). I didn't see a similar firmware update for the 7D.
But, I can't explain why the AF works in live view on your 7D with the 1.4x II extender and the 100-400 lens.
Call Canon support. They're amazing. I was on the phone with them last night and when we were finished, the guy called me back with more alternatives. I have never seen follow-up this good!

It won't autofocus on the 100-400 used with a 7D. I got mine to work on the 5D III but not the 7D. That's just the way it is. Take a look at the Canon web site for compatibility.
Guts, it won't auto focus. Do a search for" tapping the pins on Canon 100-400". If you tape the pins it will work. My 1.4X is permanently tapped. It works just fine that way. It won't report the 1.4 on the Exif data.
Good luck
