I'm rather new to Canon, and I know I should read the little booklet that came with the lens, but can anyone quickly tell me the difference between the stabilizer 1 and stabilizer 2 settings and which I should be using?

Easy!
IS position 1 is for hand holding "STILLS" Portraits, landscapes.
IS position 2 is for "PANNING" (left-right-left) moving cars, planes, trains etc.

Read the book, you will LOVE the lens on it's capabilities.

When I read the manual 1 is for general shakes stabilization and 2 excelled in panning movement. If you included a phone number you wouldn't have had to read this

thank you both for answering my question. I'm out of town and didn't bring the book with me so this helps a lot.
