Amazon delivered my external drive a day early, so I tried to clone a boot drive. When I connect the internal drive WD drive using a drive docking station, I hear the ba-bump tune when it connects, and I get a little notice in the lower right telling my my device is ready to use, but clicking on My Computer does not show the drive. If I right-click on My Computer and go to Disk Management, it is listed farther down, so the machine knows it's there.
How can I access this drive? It's on my son's machine, an HP Core i7 running Win7. I get the same results connecting it to my Dell.
did you try using my computer icon on desktop?

Yes. I used another external drive - not new, and it recognizes that. Do I have to format this drive?

It clearly shows Drive 6 as not having a partition.
I had the same thing when I bought a bare drive to use in a dock station.

Jerry, you need to create and format a partition on that drive in order to use it. Also, assign a drive letter that you currently do not use.
Good luck!
Thanks. I think that will do it. I did not see Format, but I did see the chance to create a Simple Volume, something I had never heard of. That's what I'm doing now.
what about using add new hardware?

It knows that the hardware is there, and it knows that it's working right. Windows seems to want me to go to Create a Simple Volume and then do the formatting. That's what I did, and it's ready to go. I think. I used to be able to right-click and select Format.
Jerry, try clicking on the shaded area, right or left and you should see a pop up, which shows the action you need to carry out to get the drive recognised.

Right. It was something I hadn't seen before: Create a New Simple Volume. After going in that direction, I was able to format it.

I had the same problem with a WD external HD. I went to the Western Digital website and downloaded a small format program designed for my external HD. End of problem.
Because this HDD can be used by many different systems it is not formatted at the factory. Once you format the drive you will be able to access it. The old command line program was called fdisk.exe. The old command line program to check the disk for unusable sectors was called chkdisk.exe. It still exists in Windows.

You do this by just right clicking on that drive, then select New Simple Volume. After formatting you can right click again and assign any unused drive letter you like.

Yeah, I finally did that, but I don't remember seeing the Simple Volume before. I would right-click and select Format.
