UN Now Wants to Regulate Spanking

Not content with encouraging and funding terrorism and a vast panoply of sleaziness and financial wrongdoing, the UN in its infinite arrogance now believes it should regulate spanking. I am reminded of the wisdom of a realist who said, "If we toppled that UN building into the East River, it would be the better for the world and the worse for the fishes."

UN should keep spanking opinion to itself

TORONTO - Quick question.

Have you ever spanked a child?

We’re not talking an old-fashioned thrashing behind the woodshed, much less a boxing of the ears.

Just an open-palmed slap in a moment of parent-administered discipline as opposed to switching, paddling, belting, caning or whipping.

Well, if you answered yes, then I hope you’re seated comfortably as you read this because you might have reason to fall off your chair.

The United Nations disapproves and is pretty sure it knows better than you how to raise a child.

Last week, the global body took Australia to task for letting parents slap their children. It followed other official UN warnings to the land Down Under in 1997, 2005 and 2011.

A UN Committee on the Rights of the Child report told Australia to abolish the right of parents to use reasonable chastisement to discipline children.

The committee would also like teachers and child-care workers to report cases of parents spanking.

That UN intervention drew a swift rebuttal from Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who’s leader of Australia’s governing coalition of conservative parties.

“All parents know that occasionally the best thing we can give is a smack, but it should never be something that hurts them,” Abbott told local television.

“I was probably one of those guilty parents who did occasionally chastise the children, a very gentle smack I’ve got to say. I think that we’ve got to treat our kids well, but I don’t think we ought to say there’s no place ever for smacks.”

Spanking children is illegal in 34 countries, including New Zealand, Germany and Spain, but not Canada.

A controversial passage in Section 43 of our Criminal Code authorizes spanking provided it falls under the strict proviso that it is “reasonable under the circumstances.”

It was drafted in 1892.

A broader outline of official corporal punishment follows with the caveats requiring that any Canadian child who is spanked must be between two and 12 years of age, the blows may only be administered with an open palm and the force used must be “transitory and trifling in nature.”

That’s all. The rest is up to the Canadian parent or guardian to judge.

Lucie Boileau, senior communications adviser for the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), confirmed as much.

She said the CMA has no policy on this issue per se and no formal resolution or policy document, but has published plenty of debate on the issue in the past.

“I’m sure we don’t approve, but we don’t have a formal resolution or policy document that says this,” Boileau said.

There is no shortage of academic papers published across Canada warning against spanking children. There have also been attempts to repeal the current legislation in the House of Commons, Senate and Supreme Court.

As long as it remains on the books, Canada may be targeted by the UN or one of its agencies and warned to cease and desist.

Which is all just a load of nonsense on stilts.

Ultimately anyone who has been — or currently is — a parent knows how difficult the job can be.

Spanking is a form of correctional punishment usually intended to teach children that bad behaviour draws consequences. No more, no less.

The broader question is this: Who asked the UN for its opinion on child discipline in the home?

You’d think that with all the trouble in the world to worry about, from Syria to the East China Sea and plenty in between, what parents do in their own home should be the least of the worries of this spectacularly-funded group of unelected busybodies.

Telling sovereign countries how to frame their statutes and recommend the implementation of laws that are almost impossible to police just makes the UN look like a bully.

And we all hate bullies, don’t we?

ABOUT THE UN:

In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations conference to draw up the United Nations Charter and International Criminal Court Statute.
The aim was to build an organization that could put a stop to global conflicts and seek a peaceful resolution to geographical disputes.
The charter outlines the main aims of the UN, which include helping to end world poverty, disease, illiteracy and to develop friendly relations between nations.
There is no paragraph or subsection devoted to ridding the world of spanking in its entire 13,338-word length.

Considering some of the news stories concerning diplomats and law experts, it is better they stay away from lecturing on childrens issues.

The UN, corrupt as it is, has no standing to give ethical or other advice to anyone else.

Pardon my ignorance, but what authority does the UN have to regulate anything or anyone ? independent nations are not answerable to the UN for anything. The UN has no authority to tell any nation to compel action one way or the other.
For my part IMHO, the UN should move to Paris and fund themselves. I would imagine the UN would last 48 hours with no US Dollars supporting their idiocy.

Frankly it would be amusing to watch. :-D

Don't be foisting the UN on a country that had Nothing to do with creating it.....if I'm not wrong this was a US idea to show the rest of the world "how it should be done"!
Lafayette helped the US fight off......do you remember who?

I hand spanked my kids less than my dad did me. My dad usually used his belt. And when we were warned about something that would result in a spanking there was no "counting to three" or something similar, we learned to listen. I know I deserved everyone, including things I didn't get caught doing.

Now me and my five brothers all grew up well adjusted, responsible adults and families of our own. We learned the value of working and taking care of each other.

Now, I once did threaten to sue my parents when I found out that I might have been traumatized when born because we were all circumcised. But it didn't seem to destroy me anymore than being spanked.
