I'm a Nikon user of their DSLR products. I'm interested in procuring a walk around high-end Point and Shoot camera. I have many friends who are Nikon user, but have purchased various Canon PowerShot (G10, G11, G12) and extremely happy with them. My only real concern is buying and new flash, if I purchased a Canon PowerShot G12. I appreciate your opinions/reasons of which one I should consider purchasing. Thanks, Arnold

For what it's worth.
One of the most important things, to me, is a view finder. The P7000, doesn't have one, if I remember correctly. The G12 does have one. If you want to stay with Nikon, may I suggest the P7100.

Great suggestion! I changed my title to reflect the P7100. Arnold

I shot Nikons for over 40 yrs, so I. was excited when, last year, Nikon entered the market with a "high end" point and shoot. It was, and continues to be, a huge disappointment! A good deal of rumors abounded as to why, well it doesn't really matter why. It was an inferior product. Maybe Nikon has improved the P7100, I hope so.
FWIT recently purchased an Olympus PEN E PL 3.It is an amazing small camera. I mention this solely because of Arnold's interest in a small P&S. Olympus has a smaller version, the PM1, this camera has interchangeable lenses with the Olympus Micro 17mm, it fits in a pocket. This camera is priced, with a lens, about the same as the Canon product. Arnold, give these Micro four thirds a look. A lot of potential in a small body. Nikon is in the game, with their "1" series. The J andV ones. Olympus, Panasonic and Sony, have a couple more years in, and I think IMHO Nikon is just entering, a similar state as the intro of the afore mentioned P700. Take a few minutes and check out some four thirds sites, or, read some of the reviews, or, just check out the specs at the Olympus Website.
I hope I haven't hijacked this stream, I feel they are compatible.

I was in that high end P&S dilema a while back. I wound up buying the NIKON P7000. At the time the reviews held them fairly close with only minor differences.

I think there were two tipping points for me to choose NIKON.
1) already own a D70,D200 & SB600. I like NIKON !!!
2) I was looking at buying an SB400 flash and it works perfectly with all three. I did buy it.

Now that I have it I love it. It sure beats carring a DSLR around when hiking and going out for some casual shooting. It has great controls and they are easliy accessable.

I just bought my GF the 7100 for Christmas and was told that the only difference is the articulating viewfinder and it is more responsive in lower light.

PS: Now you can find the P7000 out there for half the price of the new P7100 !!! If you don't care about the articulating (tilting) viewfinder screen, go for the P7000.

I recently bought the Coolpix P7100 ...... great price at B&H ....$429 ..... I bought it because you can use a Nikon flash such as the SB 800 .... also the 7100 has many improvements that were lacking on the 7000 ...also ...if you shoot Nikon then you already have some fimilarity with the Menu and controls .... such as the command dials .... the camera takes some great images ..... I am very happy with the P7100 ...

Well I'm partial to the Canon line, but I don't think you could go wrong with the G12. It is quite the camera. There are reviews comparing the two.

Yes the Canon had a higher score .... but you should go beyond the raw score .... the image quality is slightly better on the G12 .... but the 7100 has a longer reach than the G12 ... 200mm vs 140 .... also the 7100 is better in low light .... no ISO boost on the G12 and the 7100 has a sharper and larger LCD screen .... they are both excellent cameras .... but what matters is personnal biasis

I have the P7000 and love it! It does indeed have an optical viewfinder, which I consider essential for shooting outdoors, and its LCD viewfinder is sharper, brighter, and clearer than the G12. I have no idea why anyone would be disappointed in it, and I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to take the time to read its detailed manual and use all of its incredible features..

I have a P7000 and love it. I most like the VR 18-200mm effective optical zoom. Like others have stated a SB-400 flash is a great addition. However when non enthusiasts ask my recommendation, I point them at a Canon S95 and they invariably thank me for the suggestion.
