Lake Michigan smoothed with an ND

A couple of long exposures from Lake Michigan in the summer. Using a mirror lock up and / or a shorter duration to avoid a light wind are probably two ideas to try next time...

15 seconds
15 seconds...

40 seconds
40 seconds...

I like the 40 second exposure. The colors are more intense and the whole image seems brighter.

Love them both but the mood of the first one gets me.

Thanks lovelylyn. I have this one printed. It's from a summer morning just as the sun came over the horizon and the lake.

Thanks chapjohn. I remember less about the technique on this one other than I probably stacked two NDs together. I agree the colors are nice and this one gives me the confidence to continue working to also capture an overall sharper image.

I love that first one. The reflections you have are awesome. I love the colors and the warmth.

I wonder why you didn't get reflections in the 40 second exposure?

Why did you use the mirror lock up? I've done long exposures, but I haven't used that feature on my camera. I would like to learn more about that feature.

Thanks Nightski - I forget most of the specifics of the two mornings involved. The first posted was just after sunrise in Chicago where the lake was rather calm. The second was probably later in the day from what I almost remember. The wave action for 40 seconds would have cut out a reflection.

Wave action does not cut out reflections. I did a 2 minute exposure with 3 foot waves up on Lake Superior. Look at my reflections. That's why I was wondering why you were lacking reflections in the second one.

Those pictures are so tonally different that I'd guess that the 15 second shot was taken during twilight. The 40 second one looks like the sun was above the horizon- the light is more directional.

Yes, differents days, times of day and different locations looking at the same building. The redish was just before or just after (I forget) the sun came over the horizon of the water. The timestamp on the other says 7am, but also July rather than May for redish so the position of the sun would have been much different in both. Nightski another thought on the lack of reflection is the first pic is an area of water immediately at the base of the Hancock tower. While for the blue, I'm 2x or 3x further away and there's at least 1 breakwater between the building and me. The reflection never would have stretched out to my 2nd location.
