I have a Nikon D300 body with just under 4500 shots in absolute like new condition. No dirt anywhere. Everything works fine. I also have the original box with everything less the D300 strap but I have a Nikon strap on the camera now. A Sandisk 4GB 30mb/s compact flash is also in the camera. The lens I have is a Tamron 18-250 in the same like new condition. I am wanting to sell everything and upgrade. I am wanting to know what a fair price would be be. Ebay was little help as the price swing is quite large.

Thanks

Ebay has dreamers as well as stolen gear for sale cheap, you just never know. If you click their "Advanced" search and check the "Sold" or "completed" sales box, you will get a listing of what they have actually been selling for during the last couple of months.
Also check used gear sites like KEH to see what their asking prices are for similar condition gear, but keep in mind those prices will include their retail mark-up margins and private party sales will likely not get quite that much for the same items.
Good luck.

I don't have a clue about the lens but the last 4 or 5 D300 bodies (and box etc) I've seen sold, including mine, went for between $300 and $400 and the trend is downward and if Nikon ever brings out a real replacement for it - it will become a paperweight.

Your competition is the D7000 and D7100 which can be bought used for as little as $500-$600.

As noted, on ebay, after you enter "Nikon D300, body only" go down the left column and click "completed listings" Then make note of sold (green) listing WITH AT LEAST TWO BIDS. Listings with buy it now or only one bid can be inflated due to they fact that they may have been bought back by original poster and never completed. You will notice a lot of "Buy it now" prices a lot higher than those with 2 or more bids.

I have a D300 it is a Marvelous camera I was looking for an FX upgrade and was unable to find a comparable set of features especially switch layout.

So it matters what you are upgrading for. If you are upgrading for features the D7100 might get you there but you will still have a DX sensor If you are upgrading for FX as I am, I have not had a great selection. I just returned a D610 and ordered a Df and still had to give up the 51 point autofocus sensor. I will keep my D300 for sports and action wildlife. Make sure you handle the camera first and pay attention to switch layout so you will know what settings require you go into the menus and which do not

I'll tell ou what, I am still waiting fo a D400 to be announced, and was thinking about going to a D7100. After handling one in the store, and comparing it to my pro-body D300s, I decided against it ! I can't imagine that my images with th D7100 could be any better than those shot with my D300s. Instead, I purchased a Fuji X100s to compliment my new love of street photography. Now I have 2 top notch cameras. If you read the reviews on the Fuji x100s, many compare the image quality to the Canon 5 MkIII..
My images with the Fuji compare very favorably with those shot with my D300s. That's enough for me !

And the D700 or D800 with identical layouts didn't work for you? What FX bodies did you look at, the D610 only?

The D700 is still holding its price and the D800 has about 35 megapixels if memory does not fail.
I have used both and both are excellent cameras. The 12 megapixels D700 is enough for my needs.
The AF of the D700 I am sure is the same AF used in the D300 which is excellent and low light performance is very good too.
I have not used the D600 or D610 but any of those two cameras are intended as full frame entry cameras.

I did not consider the D700, maybe I should have. The D800 layout required for all auto focus options you need to go to the menus. I also did not want to go to such a large file size or 4 fps.

I decided to go with the Df and a 50 mm f1.4 G. I want to return to carrying a camera with me all the time and take advantage of the high ISO low light with good auto focus without a focus assist light and direct controls. So I went with the Df.

I hope to do more street photography, candid shots We shall see how it works out. And I have my D300 for surf photography etc

BTW. when I said the D300 has all autofocus options I meant that the switch on the D3 had spot center weighted and matrix all on one switch. I use that, ISO and exposure compensation the most while usually shooting in aperture priority.

A BIG thanks to all who responded. After careful consideration and since I am not moving up to FX, at least not anytime soon, I decided to just keep my D300. It is a great camera and built like a tank. I could not rationalize enough reasons to sell the D300 as it serves me well and i am happy with it. Maybe I will consider a better lens.

Locally, these sell in the $450.00 range at the pro shop near my house. They almost never sell third party lenses, so the Tamron, I can't help you with....
