I have an old Nikkor - P Auto f2.8 180mm, ser. #320447 lens. Will it work on newer Nikon bodies from about D5100 and newer models? Thanks for any replies.

Your lens is a Pre-Ai version. It will mount & take pictures on your D5100 but you will have to manually focus (of course) & meter too as that camera will not meter with manual focus lenses. You can use either a hand held meter or use the old "Sunny 16" method to get in the ball park & then fine tune the exposure with the LCD?Histogram. Needless to say, not effective for fast moving action or rapidly changing light levels. In order to get metering with the older manual focus lenses, you need a D200 or better camera (F7000 & D71000 will meter as well). Another point to remember is that unless your Nikkor lens has been AI modified, it will damage any Nikon DSLR that has a built in focus motor (except for the new Df camera)...

Screamin Scott; I have several pre-Ai (pre 1969) Nikkor prime lens.
1. If I have them modified to work on a DSLR body (d90) which has a built in focusing motor will those lens still work on the old film SLR body?
2. If I don't have them modified will they mount on a DSLR body (d3100 & d5200) which does not contain an internal focusing motor without damaging that DSLR's body?

Yes to both questions... If you have them modified, they will work on any Nikon SLR or DSLR without damaging anything....As for the old bodies, as long as you leave the metering "prong" alone they will still work on the older Nikon SLR's that they were originally meant to be used with
