I assume you mean lower shutter speed. I'm sure the flakes would have been a line vertically.
Exactly. Hence the ghost effect, the background would have been sharp yet blurry, like a ghost.

Flash and snow is fun to play with. Here is one of mine that looks like falling stars almost, hope you don't mind.
Have also experienced those "Et" blobs at night, and tried to duplicate the effect the following night. After several trials all I can figure out is that the moisture content of the air was rather high - very light mist. Kinda cool though!!
