Last weekend we had our first significant snow. I went out for a walk and was able to photograph a couple of small birds braving the frigid temperatures and snow.

I've always wondered if puffed up feathers really keep a bird warm? But I guess so ....... I have a goose down winter coat that keeps me toasty even in zero degree weather.

Good photos. Poor birdies. And I thought mine looked cold braving the 45 degree winds.

Thanks for the kind comments. I should probably mention that the light was very bad so I used fill flash for these shots

Thanks. I was lucky to find a large feeding flock of mixed sparrows next to a hedgerow - lots of activity and opportunity for shots

I am amazed that such small birds do not freeze to death - but somehow they survive - quite remarkable. Their feathers must work very well
